Doris M. Buening, 93, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021. 

She was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Louis and Jesse (Wachuta) Benish. She married William Buening at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien on May 6, 1954. They were married 50 years until William preceded her in death on March 14, 2005. Doris worked as a secretary for 48 years. She was employed by Crawford County offices, Campion Jesuit High School, Weyerhauser Company, and Nelson’s Hardwood Lumber Company. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards (euchre), and spending time with family. She was known as a big Green Bay Packer fan. She often enjoyed her plants and flowers. Her favorite expression was, “Be kind to one another.”

She will be deeply missed by her children, Susan (William) Steffek and their children Bradley and Kyle Steffek; Sandra Becker and her children Michael, Nicholas, and Robert Brinson; Sharon (Michael) Dobrose and their children Anna and David Dobrose; William (Tammy) Buening Jr. and their children Sasha, Dacoda, Echo, Jennifer, and Christopher Buening; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert (Phyllis) Benish; her sister, Gloria Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Lawrence, Lavern, and Jack Benish; and her sisters, Evelyn Falb, Leone Becwar, Bernice Wellendorf, Helen Noethe, and Marge (Buening) Kalina. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Saturday at the Garrity Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the time of departure for church. Doris’ family extends a special thanks to the medical teams of Prairie du Chien and Viroqua. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Holy Family Parish.
