Last November, the City of Guttenberg’s Community Vitality Team invited community members to provide input on what businesses and/or services they would like to see open or be made available in the community.  More than 300 people responded to the survey.

The top responses for a business that respondents would be most likely to frequent were:

• A microbrewery featuring things like a variety of brews, a food menu, live music and events pairing beer and food

• A restaurant featuring things like fast casual food, full-service breakfast, café style service, outdoor seating and locally-sourced menu items

• A coffee shop featuring things like brewed coffee and specialty coffee drinks, homemade baked goods, a food menu and live events

The survey results will be used in the Community Vitality Team’s efforts to support Guttenberg’s existing businesses and recruit new businesses to the community.

“The survey helped us determine some of the top prospects that we should focus our business expansion and recruitment efforts on,” said Community Vitality Director Emily Yaddof. “Now that we’ve identified those business gaps, we can begin to work with current businesses to fill them and to share messaging on our website, social media pages and even in available storefronts to let people know what potential new businesses already have support from the community.”

The survey also collected data on what other community vitality projects community members would like to see be a priority for the City of Guttenberg in the future. The top three responses were:

• Develop a multi-use trail system throughout the community

• Explore the feasibility of a public beach or direct shore access to the Mississippi River

• Develop a community center with wellness and cultural opportunities

“I am thrilled that community members selected development of a trail system as a top priority,” said Yaddof. “Trails make communities more attractive places to live and to visit and they can have a huge impact on the local economy.”

Trail development is already on the list of priority projects the Community Vitality Team identified last fall. The City of Guttenberg has been partnering with Wellmark’s Healthy Hometown to conduct both walking and biking audits and the City Council recently approved a trail study as well. “Between the Healthy Hometown audits and the approval of the trail study, we already have great momentum for building trail connections in our community,” Yaddof said.
