The Central wrestling team went into Saturday’s sectional tournament looking to pave a path to districts, but instead came away with five of six wrestlers failing to qualify.

“I don’t think we wrestled to our full potential, but we improved throughout the season. I’m proud of the kids and what they put in this season,” said head coach Joe Koehn.

Brandon Whittle was the lone district qualifier, finishing in second place in the 220-pound weight class. Whittle lost the first place match in 31 seconds to Louis Hamlett from Starmont. Despite the quick loss, Koehn remains confident.

“Brandon wrestled a tough kid from Starmont and he got snapped down and didn’t move his feet. He knows what he did wrong and what he needs to work on to eventually try to take him on next week at Denver. He has a tough bracket, but if he puts his mind to it, he can do some damage. Just have to come in with the right mindset and things can happen,” Koehn said.

Daniel Royer finished in third place at 120 pounds. An early loss to an MFL MarMac wrestler prevented him from being able to compete for a trip to districts. Royer finished the year with 31 victories and 16 defeats.

Nick Dietchler came in fifth place in the 126-pound weight class, with a 5-3 decision victory over Davis VanSickle from Sumner-Fredericksburg. He finished the year 31-17.

At 152 pounds, Sam Fettkether placed sixth, losing the fifth place match via fall in 2:59. He wrapped the season with a 12-32 record.

Sean Wilwert placed fourth at 160 pounds, after getting pinned in 1:12 in the third place match. On the season, Wilwert had 27 wins and 24 losses.

As the season winds down, Koehn reflected on the team’s accomplishments, from growing the girls program to putting the wrestlers in position to win.

“We have had our ups and downs, but overall, I think we all improved quite a bit throughout the season. But our season isn’t over yet. We have Brandon still wrestling into the postseason. We will continue to get him better prepared for his next opponent,” Koehn said.

Whittle will compete in districts at Denver on Saturday, Feb. 13. Wrestling starts at noon.
