The MFL MarMac boys basketball team went 1-2 last week, dropping match-ups with Kee and Crestwood, but defeating Postville.

The Bulldogs hosted Kee on Jan. 26, narrowly losing 67-62. The teams were knotted at 18 points apiece through the first quarter, before Kee pulled ahead in the second, claiming a narrow 42-37 advantage at the break. The Bulldogs trimmed that lead to 56-55 by the end of the third quarter, but couldn’t eclipse the Hawks. Kee out-scored them 11-7 in the final period to win by five points.

MFL MarMac shot 36 percent from behind the arc in the game, swishing 13 three-pointers. Unfortunately, Kee was even better, hitting 10 of 18 shots for a 55.6 percent clip. Overall, the Hawks shot eight points better than the Bulldogs and got to the free throw line nine more times. They also out-rebounded MFL MarMac 36-24.

Gavin Meana provided much of the Bulldogs’ offensive fire power, knocking down five three-pointers, which accounted for 15 of his 21 total points. Wyatt Powell added 14 points, along with five assists and two rebounds. He also snagged five of the team’s seven steals. Cayden Ball accounted for 11 points, three rebounds and a team-high seven assists, while Kaden Stocker chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and an assist.

The Bulldogs were back in action Jan. 29, defeating Postville 73-46 and snapping a six-game losing skid. MFL MarMac had a 19-11 edge through the first quarter, then pulled away in the second, using a 24-13 run to go up 43-24 at halftime. The Bulldogs continued to cruise in the second half, easily winning by 27 points.

MFL MarMac shot 50 percent from the field, paired with a strong defensive effort that included 11 steals.

Powell led the team with 16 points, and picked up three assists and three steals. Ball’s stat line included 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Carver Blietz-Bentien fell just short of a double-double with eight points, 11 rebounds and a steal. Meana added nine points and two each in the rebounds, assists and steals categories. Ben Miene and Colin Moses each tallied six points and four rebounds.

MFL MarMac couldn’t sustain that winning momentum the following day, losing a non-conference battle with Crestwood 69-37. The Cadets had the game in hand early, up 21-10 after the first quarter and 33-17 at the break. The Bulldogs couldn’t cut into the deficit in the second half.

MFL MarMac was hurt by poor shooting and turned the ball over 21 times. Crestwood also won the rebound battle 33-23.

Meana was the team’s top scorer, with eight points, and added two assists, one rebound and one steal. Blietz-Bentien had seven points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal, and Ball finished the day with six points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Stocker contributed six points and two rebounds off the bench.

The Bulldogs now sit at 5-12 overall and 5-8 in the Upper Iowa Conference. They’ll play twice this week, starting at Central on Tuesday, Feb. 2, then at Clayton Ridge on Friday, Feb. 5.
