Brooklynn Moon and the MFL MarMac defense held Turkey Valley to just a 26.8 field goal percentage, but the Trojans made up for it on the free throw line, making 24 of 36 attempts.

Turkey Valley edged MFL MarMac 47-45 in a key Upper Iowa Conference girls basketball match-up Jan. 12. The loss was the Bulldogs’ second in a row and dropped them to 7-2 in the conference and 8-4 overall. 

The night started well for MFL MarMac, with a 9-1 run in the game’s opening minutes. Turkey Valley bounced back quickly, though, trimming the Bulldog lead to 11-9 after the first quarter and pulling ahead 19-15 by halftime.

The Bulldogs continued to trail after the third period, 33-27, but made a stand in the fourth. They cut the Trojan advantage to just three points with under a minute remaining, but Turkey Valley held off the comeback.

MFL MarMac had one of its best shooting nights of the year, at nearly 41 percent. Turkey Valley, on the other hand, made only 26.8 percent of their field goal attempts. But the Trojans got to the free throw line an astounding 36 times, making 24 shots, while the Bulldogs were just 4-11. MFL MarMac was also hurt by turnovers—the team had 26 compared to only 14 by Turkey Valley.

With nine points, Lakota Morrissey was the Bulldogs’ top scorer. She also picked up five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Grace Anderson added eight points, five rebounds and a team-high three blocks, while Brooklynn Moon chipped in eight points off the bench. Miranda Lang’s stat line included seven points, three assists, two steals and a rebound. Ashley Shaw was another key bench contributor, with five points, eight rebounds and a steal.

The Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column this week, hosting South Winneshiek on Tuesday, Jan. 19, followed by a road match-up with West Central on Friday, Jan. 22.
