It was a game of statistical lows Jan. 12, as the Central girls basketball team suffered a stunning 39-18 defeat against West Central.

The Warriors put up a season-low 18 points against a team they defeated 65-33 earlier in the season. They scored fewer than six points in all four periods.

The team converted just six of 56 field goal opportunities, shooting 10.7 percent from the floor—25 percent lower than West Central.

It was even worse from three-point distance, where the Warriors made just one shot out of 24 attempts.

Delaney Scherf had five of the 18 points for the Warriors, and Ashlyn Scherf and Haley Frieden each had three points. Hannah Asche and Carly Kluesner contributed two points apiece. Grace Kuehl, Kaitlyn Wiley and Abby Cummer all had a point from the free throw line.

“The game at Maynard was an offensive struggle for the team. We successfully found open opportunities; we just could not get shots to fall. West Central played a one-two-two zone defense that we had repetitions against in practice and saw from other opponents before winter break,” said coach Mark Wiley.

The shooting struggles extended to the rest of the game, especially in rebounding, where Central was out-rebounded 48-24.

It is an element of the team’s game that has suffered with the departure of last year’s seniors.

Ashlyn Scherf led the team with five rebounds, while Delaney Scherf grabbed four.

“We were out-rebounded, but when we hit less than 11 percent from the field, it gave West Central a great amount of defensive rebounds,” Wiley said.

In other statistical categories, Delaney Scherf and Asche led the team with two assists and Ashlyn Scherf had one.

“Again, our inability to convert on the offensive end led to limited assists. We did a good job of taking care of the basketball with a season-low nine turnovers. Likewise, we forced West Central into 21 turnovers,” Wiley said.

The team was scheduled to play two more games this past week, against Midland and Kee, but those were postponed due to weather.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get back on the court the rest of the week with postponements. With a tough road loss where we didn’t convert on the offensive end, it would have been nice to shake that tough outing off and play at home,” Wiley said. “We had productive practices on Wednesday and Thursday, so we look to rebound this week with being competitive from the tip of the game.”

Central looks to solve its offensive difficulties with three games this week, beginning with a road match-up at Clayton Ridge (5-6) on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The following two games are at home, first versus Crestwood (1-10) on Thursday, Jan. 21, then against North Fayette Valley (11-1) on Friday, Jan. 22.
