After tough losses to Edgewood-Colesburg and South Winneshiek earlier in the week, the MFL MarMac boys basketball team cruised past Upper Iowa Conference opponent West Central Friday night, picking up its first win of the season.

The Bulldogs began last week’s action on Dec. 7, dropping a match-up with Ed-Co 75-40. The Vikings jumped ahead 18-11 in the first quarter, then went on a 16-6 run in the second period to take a 34-17 lead into halftime. The second half didn’t get much better for the Bulldogs, who struggled to contain the Ed-Co offense, which rattled off 33 points in the third quarter alone.

Gavin Meana led MFL MarMac with 13 points—nine of which came from behind the arc. Carver Blietz-Bentien pitched in eight points and tied for the top spot in rebounds, with five. He also had two assists. Colin Moses tallied seven points and three rebounds, while Wyatt Powell’s stat line included six points, two rebounds and three assists.

The following night, Dec. 8, the Bulldogs headed to South Winn. Despite racking up 70 points in the contest, MFL MarMac couldn’t pull off the victory, falling 87-70. The Warriors broke the game open early, leading 24-10 by the end of the first quarter and 40-25 at the break. MFL MarMac picked up the scoring pace in the second half, but couldn’t keep the Warriors—who shot over 55 percent from the field—under wraps.

With 21 points, Cayden Ball had the hot hand for the Bulldogs. He made eight of 12 shots on the night, for a stellar 66.7 field goal percentage, and drained five of his seven three-point attempts.  He also had three assists and two rebounds. Powell chipped in 15 points and dished a team-leading eight assists, in addition to grabbing three rebounds. Blietz-Bentien picked up 12 points and five rebounds and Braden Landt came away with six points and a rebound.

The MFL MarMac offense continued to stay hot Dec. 11, in the 72-46 win over West Central. The Bulldogs raced out to a 22-9 advantage in the first quarter, then pushed the lead to 40-17 at halftime.  The Blue Devils narrowed the margin slightly in the third quarter, but MFL MarMac wrapped the game with a 25-15 run, winning by 26 points.

It was Powell who led the team this time, going 7-14 from the field, including a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc, to score 17 points. He was one assist shy of a double-double, with nine, and also had six rebounds and a steal. Ball continued to play well, with 13 points, five assists, three rebounds and a steal. Blietz-Bentien totaled 12 points, a team-high eight rebounds and a steal, while Meana added nine points and two each in the rebound and assist columns. Kaden Stocker scored nine points on several three-pointers.

The Bulldogs are now 1-3 this season. They’ll play twice this week, traveling to Kee on Tuesday, Dec. 15, then at Postville on Friday, Dec. 18.
