MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau competed in the state cross country meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31, finishing 43rd in the Class 1A race.

She was MFL MarMac’s first cross country athlete to run at state in six years.

“I couldn’t be more proud of her,” said head coach Eric Koenig. “She ran a 21:34 and placed 43rd out of 152 of the top runners in Class 1A in the state. That’s nothing to hang your head about.”

“The support she has gotten from her family, teammates, school and community has been tremendous,” he added, “and I couldn’t be more thankful for how everyone has rallied around her.”

Grau’s 21:34 time was her third-best mark of the season, behind a 21:27 at Jesup on Sept. 29 and a 21:17 at the state qualifying meet at the Guttenberg Golf Course on Oct. 23.

The top three finishers at state—Kee’s Haley Meyer, South Winneshiek’s Billie Wagner and Turkey Valley’s Jalyssa Blazek—were fellow Upper Iowa Conference runners who Grau competed against throughout the year.

Running with those athletes, paired with this trip to state, only bodes well for Grau’s future in the sport, Koenig said.

“She’s got the experience now, and knows what to expect next year at the state meet,” he remarked. “Clare is going to be a force in the UIC next season and, the best part, she’s going to have other teammates right there with her.”
