MFL MarMac volleyball team wraps regular season

The MFL MarMac volleyball team wrapped up the regular season last week, following up a five-set loss to Clayton Ridge by sweeping Kee.

The Bulldogs started the Oct. 13 game at Clayton Ridge on a high note, easily winning the first set 25-17. The Eagles stormed back with 25-20 and 25-15 victories in the second and third frames, though, taking a 2-1 lead. MFL MarMac then evened the score with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. In the deciding fifth set, the Eagles flew away with a 15-9 finish.

Riley Moreland continued to dominate at the net for the Bulldogs, tallying 18 kills and two blocks. Kayden Gillitzer was second on the team with 12 kills, while Grace Anderson picked up five kills and two blocks.

Libero Lexy Johnson was busy in the back row, digging a team-high 22 balls. Miranda Lang had 19 digs and Moreland 12.

MFL MarMac’s assist leader was Lakota Morrissey, with 20, followed closely by Moreland, who earned 17. 

The Bulldogs made 81 percent of their serves against Clayton Ridge. Johnson completed 16 of 20 attempts, including four of the team’s seven aces. Moreland’s stat line included a 21-24 night with two aces, and Lang was a perfect 11-11.

MFL MarMac got back in the win column on Oct. 15, defeating Kee 3-0. The matches were fairly one-sided, as the Bulldogs won 25-18, 25-10 and 25-14.

Brooke Gillitzer led MFL MarMac in kills this time, with seven, while sister Kayden had six. Moreland and Karli Tilson each picked up five. Of the team’s four blocks, Moreland had two and Tilson and Anna Stoddard each had one.

With 18 digs, Johnson continued to dominate the Bulldogs’ back row efforts. Moreland earned eight and Lang seven.

Moreland had a big assist night too, with 11, followed by Morrissey with eight and Abby Schellhorn five.

The team upped its serving percentage to 91.5 percent at Kee and racked up 10 aces. Lang had three of those and made 14 of her 15 attempts. Johnson also picked up three aces on a 12-15 night. Moreland was 14-15 and aced two serves, while Schellhorn and Kayden Gillitzer had perfect nights of 9-9 and 11-11, respectively, with one ace apiece.

The Bulldogs ended the regular season with an overall record of 6-10 and a 5-3 finish in the Upper Iowa Conference. West Central took the top spot in the conference after going 8-0 against Upper Iowa opponents.

MFL MarMac kicked off postseason play on Monday night, taking on 4-20 South Winneshiek in Monona. The winner will head to Sumner-Fredericksburg on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
