In a spectacular week of sports for Central, the varsity volleyball team won two out of three matches, defeating Kee and South Winneshiek to bring their season record to 3-12 and forge the building blocks that will carry the team forward.

In the first match against Kee on Sept. 22, the Warriors dominated the Hawks, winning all three sets, 25-16, 25-22, and 25-18.

Alivia Keppler led the team in assists with 21, while Isabelle Groth and Brandy Beatty combined for 17 of the team’s 28 kills. Overall, on 74 kill attempts, the Warriors converted 28 for an efficiency of .176.

On defense, Ava Pensel, Chelsia Larson, and Groth all had two blocks apiece, while Lexi Loan and Beatty added one each. Maddy Wille was the leader with digs,  securing 19 of the team’s 31, and Beatty came away with five.

On the serving end, Pensel had a team-high five of the 10 total aces. Keppler scored two, while teammates Beatty, Wille, and Kaitlyn Wiley each scored one. Central’s serve efficiency rating was 93.1 percent.

In the second match, on Sept. 24, against South Winneshiek, the Warriors had to work a little harder, needing four sets to secure the victory. Central won the first set 25-22, dropped the second 25-11, came back to win the third set 25-22, and eventually put South Winneshiek away in the fourth set, 25-19. The win marked the first time all season the team has won back-to-back matches.

On offense, Pensel had 17 of the team’s 19 total assists, while Beatty had seven kills and Loan had six. In total, the team amassed 23 kills on 108 attempts, for an efficiency of -.056 percent.

On defense, the Warriors had seven blocks, two by Pensel and Larson and three by Groth. Wille dominated with 31 of the team’s 59 digs, while Pensel secured eight digs and Keppler seven.

As for serving, it was a decent night for the team. The Warriors had an 87.1 efficiency percentage and 13 aces total, led by Larson with four and Pensel with three.

In the third match of the week, on Sept. 26 at the tournament in Decorah, the two-game winning streak came to an end, as the Warriors first took on the Clayton Ridge Eagles, losing in straight sets, 21-19 and 21 – 15.

In the second game of the tournament and the final one of the week, the Warriors again lost in straight sets, this time to the Decorah Vikings, who had a remarkable 100 percent serve efficiency. Central lost by scores of 21-6 and 21-11.

The Warriors will next play at MFL MarMac on Tuesday, Sept. 29. They will follow that up with another road game against Clayton Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 1.
