The Central volleyball team got its first win of the season this past week at the Jesup Tournament, but the season struggles continued as the Warriors dropped the other three matches in straight sets.

Central first played the Jesup J-Hawks, losing both sets, 21-10 and 21-2. Ava Pensel led the team in assists with three and had one of the team’s two aces. Chelsia Larson finished with one of the team’s four kills and its only block of the match, and Maddy Wille secured four of the team’s six digs.

Overall, the Warriors totaled four kills on 46 attempts for a kill efficiency of -.130 percent. Their serve efficiency was 76.9 percent.

The following game saw the lone victory of the tournament for the Warriors, as they defeated the South Winneshiek Warriors in straight sets, 21-9 and 21-6. It was the performance of the season.

Pensel was the leader in assists, with six of the team’s seven, and she also got two kills and three of Central’s six total aces. Larson again came through on the defensive side, with two blocks, and Wille was a force with 10 digs.

The match saw the team improve in kill efficiency, with a .167 percent with 11 kills on 60 attempts. The Warriors also had a season-high 12 aces.

Central remained competitive in the next match against the Alburnett Pirates, losing a close first set 21-18 and dropping the second set 21-10. Pensel secured all four of the team’s assists, while Alyson Feickert hauled in two kills and Kaitlyn Wiley got the only block of the game. Wille continued to dominate in the digs category, coming up with six of the teams 16.

Kill efficiency was down, at -.154 percent, as the team totaled just six kills on 39 attempts with 12 kill errors. However, serve efficiency remained steady at 93.3 percent, as the team scored three aces.

In the final game of the tournament, the Warriors faced the North Linn Lynx. They kept it close in the first set, losing 21-14, before dropping the second set 21-8.

Pensel had all six of the team’s assists and five digs. Larson snagged two of the four total blocks and scored the only ace, while Wille came away with 10 digs. Brandy Beatty and Isabelle Groth both had two kills, as the team totaled six kills on 58 attempts with 14 errors.

It was a down game for serve efficiency, as the team managed 78.3 percent.

Central currently stands at 1-10, but signs of improvement are looming. The Warriors next take on the North Fayette Valley TigerHawks at home on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
