Louis Joseph Steger, 94, of rural Prairie du Chien, went home to eternal life at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020.

He was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Andrew and Katherine (Kindl) Steger. Louis was the last surviving member of St Gabriel’s eighth grade class of 1940, and one of four left from the PdC High School class of 1944.

He married Anita Check on Feb. 12, 1949, at St John’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Together they farmed in rural Prairie du Chien, beginning on a rented farm along Limery Road and Highway 35 before purchasing the existing family farm on Highway 27.

Louis was an active member of St Gabriel’s Catholic Parish, serving on the parish council and finance committees, deanery council, singing in the choir and helping with many, many projects, dinners and festivals. He served as a member of the Prairie du Chien Township board for 24 years; a DNR fire warden and was a Dairyland Seed rep. He was one of the founding members of the local rural PdC/Bridgeport townships fire department (1964-1977) and the owner/operator of one of the first self-propelled combines in Crawford County.

He is survived by six children, Mary Jo (Steve) Johnsrude, Wauzeka, Ed (Donna), Prairie du Chien, Carol (Neal) Davis, Harpers Ferry, Tim (Char), Prairie du Chien, Terry, Prairie du Chien and Theresa (Daniel) Brandes, Ferryville. He is further survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way; as well as in-laws Catherine Steger of Prairie du Chien, Esther Stierman and Rose (Al) Timmerman of Dubuque, Ruth (Larry) French of Bloomington and Beatrice Check of Prairie du Chien. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John in 2004; wife, Anita in 2016; and daughter, Margaret in 2017.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 28, at St Gabriel’s Catholic Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel and Deacon John Stierman officiating, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. A visitation will take place from 9 to 11 at the same location.
