David Leuser of Guttenberg, formerly of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away peacefully on July 16, 2020, at Ennoble Nursing and Rehabilitation in Dubuque, where he was cared for by their caring and compassionate nurses and staff. 

At his request, cremation and a private family memorial is planned for David.

David was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 18, 1925, the only child of George and Eleanor (E.D.) Leuser. His mother, Eleanor, was a beloved teacher who taught drama and writing of children’s stories and plays. The Eleanor Leuser Award for outstanding writing for or about children is named after her.

David served in the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant in the Dutch East Indies during World War II and also worked as a civilian in Manila, Philippines before returning to the states. After his service to his country, David led a very busy and creative life as a writer, teacher and spiritual mentor to many.

David is survived by his wife, Lin Valentine of Guttenberg, and his sons and a daughter from previous marriages, Bart Leuser of Albuquerque, N.M., Andrea Leuser, of Tempe, Ariz., and Chris Leuser of Tempe, Ariz., as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Two of David’s other children, Brandon Leuser and Virginia Johnson, preceded him in death.
