No spring sports for area high schools this summer

Area school districts are not having spring sports events in July. The WIAA gave each school district in the state the option of having spring sports contests beginning July 1, and released guidance and recommendations in June pertaining to COVID-19 and spring sports this summer.
In April, the WIAA Board of Control voted to cancel the 2020 spring sports regular season and tournament series, but then approved of an extension on unrestricted summertime coaching contact for spring sports from the normal five days to 30 days.
The extension would allow teams to assemble and conduct practice and competitions for up to 30 days, providing restrictions on assembling in groups were removed, and the practices and competitions were approved by district administrators and school boards.
The 30-day extension would also have to be used by the time an athlete’s fall sports season practice would begin and by the first day of school for students who are not competing in fall sports. The first day allowed for football practice is Aug. 4. The fist day for volleyball practice in Aug. 17 as per WIAA rules.
Area schools have said they will not be holding spring sports competitions this summer.
“We will not be doing any spring sports in July,” said Prairie du Chien Athletic Director Sara Godfrey.
“Teams can get together within safety guidelines that the school has set,” said River Ridge Athletic Director Wade Winkers. Winkers also noted, however, “No games will be allowed to be played on school facilities.”
“We are not going to be competing against other schools,” said Wauzeka-Steuben Athletic Director Mitchell Cernek regarding spring sports this summer. “We are hoping to focus on doing what we can to prepare for our fall seasons.”
The Seneca School District website stated, “Beginning July 1, the gym will be open for student use during regular summer hours (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). All social distancing guidelines will be followed, and everyone must wear a mask upon entering the building. We are restricted to a maximum of 10 people in the gym. The weight room will not be open at this time. Enter the front door, and sign in at the office. As always, students below sixth grade must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.”
