The MFL MarMac baseball team improved its record to 8-4 last week, bouncing back from a doubleheader sweep at the hands of undefeated South Winneshiek to win games against North Fayette Valley and East Buchanan.
The Bulldogs faced off against South Winn on June 29. The Warriors took game one of the doubleheader 11-1, aided by three separate four-run innings.
MFL MarMac managed just four hits against tough South Winn pitching. Cullen McShane had two of those and scored the team’s lone run in the second inning. Max Havlicek and JT Stocker had one hit apiece.
In game two, the Bulldogs were within striking distance through the sixth inning, down just 6-2. The Warriors broke the score open in the top of the seventh, though, unleashing six runs to win 12-2.
Stocker tallied two of the team’s four hits and also scored a run. Ethan Stubbs singled, stole a base and crossed the plate once, and Cedrick Drahn singled and knocked in a run.
MFL MarMac rebounded from the losses the following night, with a 4-0 shutout of North Fayette Valley. Kaleb Tilson kept the TigerHawks grounded, allowing just three hits over seven innings. He also struck out seven batters.
Drahn had a big night at the plate, going 2-4 with an RBI. Stocker singled and drove in a run, and McShane picked up a hit and scored three times.
MFL MarMac wrapped up the week July 1, earning an 11-1 win over East Buchanan on senior night. The game was close through the fourth inning, with the Bulldogs ahead just 3-1. They quickly widened the gap, however, scoring three times in the fifth inning and five times in the sixth to cement the victory.
The game marked another outstanding Bulldog pitching performance, as Stubbs allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings of work.
Stocker boosted the MFL MarMac offense, racking up two hits, including a triple, along with two RBIs and three runs scored. Havlicek singled twice and drove in a run, while Drahn went 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. McShane doubled, knocked in a run and crossed the plate three times himself.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season this week, beginning with a doubleheader at Clayton Ridge/Central on Monday, July 6. The team will then travel to South Winn for one game on Tuesday, July 7, host a doubleheader with Kee on Wednesday, July 8, then play once at Turkey Valley on Thursday, July 9.
The playoffs start Saturday, July 11, when MFL MarMac hosts Central City. The game will begin at 7 p.m. in Monona.
