Lester Lee Groth, 78, of Garber, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at his residence.

Visitation was Sunday, June 14, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and before the services at the church on Monday.

Funeral services were Monday, June 15, at the former Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport, conducted by Pastor Roland Waterman.

Interment was at Mount Harmony Cemetery, rural Garber.

Lester was born on April 11, 1942, in Oelwein, the son of Ernest and Velma (Willie) Groth. Lester was raised and educated in the Elkport area, attending the Dannenbring Country School until the third grade. He then attended the Elkport schools and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1961. After graduation, Lester farmed and worked at Farley and Letcher for a short period of time. 

On Jan. 15, 1972, Lester was united in marriage to Una Horstman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Three sons were born to this union. The couple farmed together on the family farm raising a variety of animals as well as grain farming. 

Lester enjoyed driving, fixing tractors, and cutting wood. He also liked attending tractor shows. Lester loved to give family members whisker rubs. He liked to watch John Wayne westerns and had collections of key chains, ink pens, pencils, and hats. Lester was a member of the Elkport/Garber Fire Department for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Una Groth of Garber; his three sons, Terry (Stacie) Groth of Strawberry Point, Kevin (Nikki) Groth of Strawberry Point, and Jared (Jody) of Garber; 11 grandchildren, Damian, Meredith, Karsen, Liam, Erica, Kristen, Isabelle, Travis, Serena, and Elsa Groth; plus one great-grandchild on the way. 

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Alvin and Mary Horstman; his granddaughter, Makenzie Groth; and one brother-in-law, Karl Horstman.
