With five offensively-productive seniors lost to graduation, the MFL MarMac softball team will rely on its pitching and defense to carry the load this season.

“But even though we lost the seniors, we have youngsters that got tested last year,” said head coach Jerald Kleve, who’s entering his fifth season at MFL MarMac. Pat Wille is in her second season as assistant coach.

“Lauren Haberichter and Mackenzy Ruff have been throwing [leading up to the season],” Kleve added, “and our infielders have a lot of experience, with senior Keri Picha back after missing last season with knee surgery.”

In addition to Picha at third base, senior Jordan Schubert (centerfield), senior Brinan Berger (shortstop) and sophomore Abby Schellhorn (second base) will lead the defense. Freshmen Lauren Kishman, Ashley Shaw and Savannah Schaller will also fill key roles, Kleve noted.

Sophomore Jessica Loera will spend time in the outfield, and junior Abby Koslowski will try her hand at catching. Ruff, a junior, and Haberichter, a sophomore, will alternate between first base and pitching.

“Our newbies will be eighth graders Ayla Gerndt, Katelyn Gerndt, Kaylee Walch, Clare Grau and Emily Troester,” said Kleve. “Because of no JV schedule, we will try to get the eighth graders game experience as we play the varsity schedule.”

Following a delayed start, “these girls are ready to play and get the season started,” Kleve remarked. “We’ll take each game one at a time.”
