Roger Fuelling
December 17, 1935—May 7, 2019

Roger Elmer Louis Fuelling, 83, of Monona, IA, died Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at his home in Monona. Roger was born on December 17, 1935, near Farmersburg, to Carlton and Gretchen (Lenth) Fuelling. He was a member of the last graduating class at Farmersburg High School in 1953. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and was currently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona.

Roger was united in marriage to Beverly Kluss on July 31, 1955 at St. Paul, Monona. To this union four children were born. The couple divorced but remained good friends until Beverly’s death in 2016.

Roger worked most of his life in the farm implement business. He also enjoyed working as an umpire/referee for the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for over 30 years, including officiating two girls state basketball tournaments. As a high schooler, he earned many awards in baseball. He played one year at Luther College and continued his love for the game by participating in several adult softball leagues. Roger was an avid bowler and was proud of his three 300 games. He also enjoyed golfing, pool, hunting, and fishing. Roger especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He was a lifelong Cubs, Bears, and Hawkeyes fan. Nearly every day, Roger would pick up his granddaughters’ dog, Murphy, and take him for a walk or a car ride. They were very good buddies.

Survivors include his son, Randy Fuelling, daughters Jodi (Wayne) Welch and Melissa (Steve) Haberichter, all of Monona; six grandchildren, Jason Welch of Kansas City, MO, and friend Stacie Radloff of Monona, Truman (Dianne) Tucker of Rochester, MN, Ben (Ciara) Tucker of Cannon Falls, MN, Ryan (Shannon) Tucker of Rosemount, MN, Jillian Haberichter and fiance Brandon Burke of Monona, and Lauren Haberichter of Monona, and eight great grandchildren: Collin, Gretchen, Reagan, Lauren, Elliot, Tommy, Sully, and Stella, and son-in-law, Stan Birkel.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Carlton and Gretchen Fuelling; his ex-wife and good friend, Beverly Fuelling; his oldest daughter, Sheila Tucker Birkel, and his sister, Marlene Chickering.

Visitation was Tuesday, May 14, 2019 from 4-8 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday. Funeral services were held at 11 am on May 15, 2019 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa with Pastor Erika Kielstrup as the officiant. Honorary pallbearers are Roger’s grandchildren. Inurnment was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona, Iowa following the service.
