Members of undefeated eighth grade football team honored
Members of the MFL MarMac eighth grade football team, which went undefeated both this year and last year, were honored during halftime of the high school game against BCLUW Oct. 20.
The team went 6-0 this year, capping off their undefeated season with 52-14 and 51-0 victories over Prairie du Chien and Oelwein, respectively.
The Bulldogs’ victories all came in dominating fashion, as the eighth grade team out-scored its opponents by a combined score of 259-32. The offense averaged over 43 points per game, in addition to over 350 rushing yards per contest. They did not punt once. Interestingly, the team also kicked three field goals in its final game against Oelwein, a feat that’s rare in the junior high game, noted coach Chet Bachman.
The eighth grade defense was equally dominating, giving up an average of 5 points per game. MFL MarMac shut out its opponents in 4 of 6 games this season and gave up just a single touchdown all year prior to the fourth quarter, when the game was already in hand. In fact, the defense actually scored twice as many touchdowns as their opponents’ offenses.
This group finished their middle school career undefeated, with a record of 11-0-1. The only tie came last year, against Waukon.
“These guys were a pleasure to coach,” shared coach Dan Anderson. “It’s amazing what you can accomplish when nobody cares who gets the credit. These kids played for each other, and not for themselves.”
“These kids played well together and had each others’ backs throughout the season,” added Bachman. “They were willing to do anything that made the team better.”
