Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi and Deputy Dave Tschantz met with the Clayton County Board of Supervisors June 26 to discuss security at the Clayton County Courthouse.
Sheriff Tschirgi showed the supervisors a supervisory order from the Iowa Supreme Court that establishes a statewide weapons policy concerning the carrying of weapons in the Courthouse.
The Supreme Court policy prohibits “all weapons from courtrooms, court-controlled spaces and public areas of courthouses and other justice centers,” with the exemption of peace officers. Sheriff Tschirgi said that the policy has already been in effect in Clayton County for some time. The supervisors approved a motion to approve the wording of the Supreme Court policy and extend the prohibition to all county buildings.
