Marvin Charles Schaal, 80, of Hamtramck, Mich., formerly of Prairie du Chien, died Saturday, April 22, at home with his family after a brief illness.

He was born on July 24, 1936, in Modesto, Calif., to Irene and Lester Schaal, then raised in rural towns of Wisconsin. Marvin was a United States Air Force Veteran, serving in Vietnam. He met and married his beloved wife Monique while stationed in France and using a French to English dictionary to communicate. They spent 50 years together.

To say that Marvin looked forward to making his yearly trip to Wisconsin would be an understatement. He would start packing in March to spend the month of July with his beloved nephew Lester Olson.

He is survived by his children Mary Schaal and Gregory (Rebecca) Schaal; three grandchildren Austin, Savannah and Leannah; a brother Don Schaal; and a sister Deloris Burr.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Monique Schaal, who passed away Dec. 20, 2013; as well as brothers Robert Schaal, Vernon (Mary) Schaal; and sisters Doris Heize and Dorcas Olson.

A private memorial will be held in Michigan. A family and friends memorial will also be held in Prairie du Chien, in July.
