Joni Kay Welke, age 45, of Chippewa Falls died Tuesday, Sept. 27, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

She was born on July 22, 1971, in Prairie du Chien, to Jon and Carol (Nelson) Burlingame. She grew up there and graduated from Prairie du Chien Senior High School in 1989.

She then attended Winona Technical College for accounting. Joni worked in banking and real estate before moving to Finley Engineering in November of 2007. She was set up on a blind date that eventually turned into marriage to Ron Welke on Oct. 30, 2004. Joni loved to watch sports, including the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers. She also loved to golf, read, take baths and sing maudlin songs with her twin sister. She had a “waitress” personality and was known for her smile that lit up any room she walked into. Her children and grandson were her world. Joni will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her husband, Ron Welke; two children, Zachary Frey, of Eau Claire, and Megan Frey, of Chippewa Falls; one grandson, Tanner Frey, of Eau Claire; parents, Jon and Carol Burlingame, of Prairie du Chien; twin sister, Mary (Mathew) Stone of Dubuque, Iowa; sister, Ann (Dennis) Wagner, of Eau Claire; parents-in-law, Richard and Diane Welke, of Eau Claire; three siblings-in-law, Richard (Vicky) Welke of Stanley, Russell (Kathy) Welke, of Altoona, and Jean (Andrew) Ritchie, of Eau Claire; eight nieces and nephews, Jacob and Justin Wagner, Samson and Jackson Stone, Nicole and Erika Welke, Emeline and Kate Ritchie; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Joni’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel (535 S Hillcrest Pkwy, Altoona, WI 54720.) Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Another service will be held in Prairie du Chien at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org). Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Altoona is assisting the family with arrangements.
