Margaret M. Koopman, 97, of Bloomington, passed away on Sunday, July 24, surrounded by her loving family at Orchard Manor Nursing Home. 

She was born on Sept. 30, 1918, the daughter of Paul and Susan (Gillitzer) O’Shaughnessy. Margaret graduated from Seneca High School. On Nov. 6, 1940, she was united in marriage to Omer C. Koopman at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Seneca. After their marriage they farmed on the Koopman family farm in Patch Grove Township for over 60 years. Margaret was a homemaker and loved raising her family. She raised chickens and chinchillas and did all of the chores that came with them. Margaret was a talented seamstress and sewed many dresses, clothing, and even wedding dresses for family and friends. She had a very artistic side and enjoyed painting china, oil painting, and decorating wedding cakes. Margaret was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington. 

Survivors include her three daughters Mary Sue (Earl) Sewell, Sharon Barr, Barbara Moss; a son, Jim (Laurie) Koopman; many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jen Hermsen.

Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband, Omer; a granddaughter, Tonya Monroe; three sons-in-law Terry Monroe, John Barr, and Ben Moss; a brother, Pete O’Shaughnessy; sisters, Eileen (Tom) Snell Slade, Kay (Cletus) Breuer, Betty Sue (Bernie) Boylen; Ann O’Shaughnessy; two brothers-in-law, Ambrose Hermsen and Hank Slade. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Family and friends may call on Friday from 9:15 a.m. until time of services at the church, where a 9 a.m. parish rosary will be prayed. Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Bloomington is assisting the family.
