Clarence Lavern Curtis, 96, of Dodgeville and Mesa, Ariz., died on Friday, June 24, at Upland Hills Health.

He was born the youngest of four children of John “Jack” Curtis and Ruth Elma Quick on Feb. 28, 1920 in Patch Grove. Clarence attended Military Ridge grade school (a one room school near the Curtis farm). Further education was at the Patch Grove high school from which he graduated in 1938. He had many fond memories of his classmates and was proud of his participation in basketball and baseball during his high school years. Clarence married the former Beatrice Elizabeth (Betty) Harris on July 23, 1941. She preceded him in death on March 10, 1995. Together they farmed in the Patch Grove area for many years. They welcomed three children, James (Margaret Planner), Gene and Carol (Michael) Huser. Clarence was involved in community service, the town board of Patch Grove, School Board of Patch Grove, B.O.D. Grant Electric Cooperative, Grace Lutheran Church, Dodgeville Masonic Lodge #119 and Odd Fellows Lodge where he met the woman who would become his wife after his first wife Betty passed away. Mary E. (Klir) Horne and Clarence were married on Nov. 30, 1996 and enjoyed a wonderful life together for many years. They especially enjoyed their friends and playing euchre for hours on end. Somehow he even came away with a way to play 10 handed euchre using multiple decks and a complex set of rules. Clarence was a loving and caring parent who was always there to provide guidance and support for his children’s activities in school events, sports, drama, 4H, Music, FFA etc. He never missed a basketball game and let us not forget his admiration of John Deere tractors and machinery. He has a John Deere clock in their Arizona home. Clarence was a unique person who developed friendships wherever he went. Over 300 people attended his 95th birthday party in Holiday Village in Mesa, Ariz.. May he rest in peace with the memory of a life well lived. He will be remembered and missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Beatrice; two brothers, Fay and Walter Curtis and his sister, Leona Curtis Boldt.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Mary Curtis of Dodgeville; three children, James (Margaret Planner) Curtis; Gene Curtis and Carol (Michael) Huser; five grandchildren Douglas and Richard (Rachel) Huser; Sarah (Jordan Fineberg) Curtis; Becky Curtis and Amy Pranger; two step grandchildren, Katie (Ryan) Butman and Lizzie (Jesse Nicita) Hardy; eight great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Curtis and Rose Klir as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends may call at Grace Lutheran Church on Thursday, June 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. where Odd Fellow Services will be held at 8 p.m. Friends may also call on Friday after 10 a.m.
