Dairy royalty to be named
The Crawford County June Dairy Month Kick-Off Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 29 at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall, Eastman. The night will kick off at 7 p.m., with a cheese and cracker social where attendees can meet the candidates for the Crawford County Dairy Royalty contests. A spaghetti and chicken Alfredo dinner prepared by the Eastman United Methodist Church will follow at 7:30 p.m.
The program is filled with lots of delightful dairy tidbits, from the dairy promotion report, the introduction of the dairy breakfast host family and the honorary Dairy Month chairpersons, to the final messages from the 2015 Crawford County Dairy Royalty. This year’s candidates will present their prepared dairy speech as they are introduced, followed by the coronation of the 2016 Crawford County Dairy Princess and Little Miss Squirt, along with their attendants.
Tickets can be purchased from any Crawford County Dairy Promotion member or by contacting Steve Achenbach at (608) 874-4400.
This year’s Dairy Princess candidates are Emily Steger, 17-year-old daughter of Tim and Char Steger, of rural Prairie du Chien, and Brooklynn Nagel, the daughter of Jon and Becky Nagel, of Eastman. The 2016 Little Miss Squirt candidates are Darci Jelinek, 9-year-old daughter of Brad and Melany Jelinek, from Gays Mills, and Grace Callahan, 8-year-old daughter of Josh and Carrie Callahan, of rural Wauzeka.
Contest interviews were held May 14, at the Peoples State Bank in Prairie du Chien. This year’s judges were Lynnette Lyons, of Castalia, Iowa, and Jessica Kramer, of Eastman. Lynette, her husband Doug, and children Carly and Michael live on a 200-acre registered red and white Holstein dairy. She has been employed with Northeast Iowa Community College in business services for the past 27 years. Their family loves showing holsteins at local, state, and national shows. Jessica was the 2006 Crawford County Dairy Princess. She considers it a privilege to be a judge for the competition.
