Mary Corrine Hansel, 92, of Elkport, died on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 28, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood, conducted by Rev. John Haugen and Rev. Richard Gaul.

Interment was in Hansel Cemetery, rural Garber.

Corrine was born on Feb. 10, 1923, in rural Elkport, the daughter of James and Lucy (Heitman) Phelan. Corrine was raised and educated in the Elkport area, attending rural school.

On June 11, 1941, Corrine was united in marriage to Alfred Vernon “Bill” Hansel at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Garber. Together they farmed in the Garber area and later operated Bill’s Place in Elkport. Corrine also worked as a cook in numerous locations for many years. After Bill’s death, she resided in Elkport until the flood of 2004 at which time she moved to Yankee Settlement in Edgewood, Assisted Living in Elkader, and in June of 2015 moved to the Guttenberg Care Center.

Corrine was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Garber until its closing, at which time she became a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood. She was a member of St. Michael’s Rosary Society, St. Michael’s Cemetery Board, and numerous other church organizations. Corrine also opened her home to anyone in need. She loved and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her seven children, Eldon (Patricia) of Edgewood, Dwight (Linda) of Elkader, Michael of Garber, Jeffrey (Susie) of Elkport, Scott (Lalene) of Elkader, Jon (Deb) of Greeley and Ann (Gary) Armstrong of Elkader; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Corrine was preceded in death by her husband; her son and daughter-in-law, Realto and Maxine Hansel; her parents; two brothers and sisters-in-law, LaVern and June Phelan and Thomas and Betty Phelan.
