Arlene Harriet Rude, 90, of St. Olaf, died Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Arlene was born April 27, 1925, at home in rural Ridgeway, to Hans and Anna (Haga) Engen. She grew up on a farm near Ridgeway.

As an only child, she loved playing with her cousins whenever she could and enjoyed riding her horses.

She attended country school, transferred to Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School in 1943.

She was united in marriage to Harry W. Rude on November 28, 1950. Five children were born to this union.

Arlene loved playing cards, being an active member of Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, listening to Danny O’Donnell and helping Jr. and LaVonne Christianson make potato salad for the many graduations and weddings LaVonne catered. She always said that’s a lot of potatoes! She treasured the time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many friends. She was known as always having a smile on her face. At Christmas time, Arlene enjoyed making lefse with her granddaughter, Kristy. When Christmas morning came, you could never tell who was the most excited to check out the Christmas stockings – Grandma Rude or all of the grandchildren!

Her last few years, the Elkader Care Center was her home. She was so proud when asked to lead exercises. She was the “go to” gal to get either a game of cards or dominoes going. She will truly be missed by the many friends she made there.

Arlene is survived by a son, Daryl (MaryAnn) Rude; daughter, Becky (Mark) Kainz and a daughter-in-law, Jan; five grandchildren, Kim Richardson, Scott (Christine) Kainz, Kristy (Lance) Amsden, Cory Rude, Christopher (Liz) Rude; nine great-grandchildren, Ally & Kira Richardson, Amelia, Maria, Tyler and Jacob Kainz, Brooklyn & Addison Amsden and Chesney Rude.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Mark; daughter, Connie and son, Randy.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 25, at 11 a.m. at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder, where a visitation was held one hour before services. Interment was at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder.

Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader is assisting the family. Online condolences may be left with www.leonardfuneralhomes.com
