Randy Evanson approached the Monona Council Monday evening about purchasing 65-gallon refuse carts and a garbage truck tipper attachment, which he said would make lifting garbage cans easier for city workers.

The tipper would cost around $4,000, including installation. The purchase of new garbage carts runs at $43.50 per cart, a cost that would likely fall on citizens.

Special cans are needed for the tipper, Evanson said, adding that the cans would resemble those residents already use for recycling.

Since the tipper would be used to lift the garbage can rather than manpower, Evanson said it would cut down on residents leaving extra garbage at the curb. The current limit is two cans or four bags at no more than 40 pounds, an amount some exceed, he said.

The big question, mayor Barb Collins asked, is “How long is Monona going to be in the garbage business?”

The council agreed and felt it would be prudent to get price quotes for garbage collection from outside companies before making a decision.

Bulldog Boulevard

The council approved an engineering services agreement with Fehr Graham, of West Union, for the Bulldog Boulevard permeable paver improvement project.

Per the agreement, Fehr Graham, under the direction of Jon Biederman, will provide design and construction engineering services for reconstruction of the gravel-surfaced portion of Bulldog Boulevard, from Tower Street to West Davis Street. The project is approximately 660 feet in length, with around 550 feet of that planned to be permeable pavers and the rest Portland cement concrete. Drainage will also be incorporated into the project. Upon completion, the street width will be 24 feet wide.

Biederman previously worked with the city on the permeable paver project for the aquatic center parking lot.

The fee, including work, time and materials, will be $39,000.

Police update

Monona Police Chief Jo Amsden said the department had a busy October with a few disputes and some suspicious activity to investigate. There were also some accidents.

Amsden added that the department is down to one vehicle as the transition is made from the Chevrolet Caprice to the new vehicle, a Ford Interceptor.

She also noted the Monona’s winter parking regulations, which make it unlawful for any person to park a vehicle on the street or in an alley between 2 and 6 a.m. on any day between Nov. 15 and April 1, are now in effect.
