Gerd Friedrich “Opa” Dudenbostel, 83, of Boscobel, died Monday, Aug. 17, at Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care, Viroqua. 

Gerd Friedrich Dudenbostel was born on Oct. 22, 1931 to Wilhelm and Helene (Söhlke) Dudenbostel in Gross Burgwegel, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in Germany. 

Opa came to the United States as a German exchange student in 1950 through the Church of the Brethren and State Department. He lived with the Alvah and Carol Morphew family. He graduated from Tipton Consolidated Schools in Tipton, Iowa. He joined the United States Army in 1953 and served in the Korean War before being honorably discharged in 1955. He was united in marriage to Dixie Morphew on Feb. 22, 1959 at the Morphew’s home in Clarence, Iowa. 

Opa was a dairy and agricultural farmer in Iowa before moving to Wisconsin. He and Dixie moved to a farm near Steuben in 1961 and lived there until 2008, from there they moved to Boscobel. He enjoyed working on the farm, taking family trips to Devil’s Lake and he was a history buff with a strong faith. He was a member of Eastman Wesleyan Church where he gave his life to the Lord in October 1968 and also was a member of the American Legion in Boscobel. 

Opa is survived by his wife, Dixie, “Oma;” six children, Martin (Vicki) Dudenbostel of Boscobel, Don (Kim) Dudenbostel of Steuben, Willie Dudenbostel of Steuben, Sarah Bourff of Indianapolis, Ind., Nathan Dudenbostel of Boscobel, and Wesley (Angela) Dudenbostel of Steuben; fifteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and one nephew.

Opa was preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelm and Helene Dudenbostel; sister, Ingrid Preuss; two infant sons, Gary Stephen and Gerald; and two infant granddaughters, Mariah and Laura. 

Visitation will be on Friday, August 21, 2015 from 5-8 pm at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Salem United Methodist Church, Eastman, Wisconsin.

Burial will follow at National Cemetery, Eastman, Wisconsin with Military Rites.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin is helping the family with the arrangements.
