Georgia (Bunts Hubbard) Wepking peacefully departed this world on Aug. 12, with family by her side. During her last days at Kindred Hearts Senior Living in Cottage Grove, she gifted family and special friends with goodbye showers of kisses to their cheeks and hands.

Born in 1929, Georgia was the second of 13 children born to Harmon and Sarah (Tittle) Bunts, and was named for George Washington, whose February 22 birthday she shared. She grew up on the family farm near Woodman, where she learned to deeply love nature, birds and animals.

As valedictorian of her Mount Hope High School graduating class, Georgia declined a full scholarship to study teaching, and instead devoted herself to her family and helping on the farm on weekends. After graduation she moved to Prairie du Chien, worked at Harvey’s, and in 1948 married Kenneth C. Hubbard. There they raised two sons, Kenneth M. and Lonnie. Family life changed for Georgia and the boys when Kenneth Sr. passed away at age 35.

A strong and quiet woman, Georgia enjoyed the out of doors especially, and was an avid bird watcher and savior of stray cats. In the early years she found time for a bowling league, and was proud to win city doubles. Besides seed catalogs, she enjoyed the annual Farmer’s Almanac and the challenge of crossword puzzles.

In 1971 she and Stewart Wepking married and after a few years moved from Prairie du Chien to Mount Hope, where she helped Stewart manage a small trucking company. She was happy in the beautiful hilly country there, often visiting the family farm nearby, and always feeding the birds. Her huge garden was a blue ribbon wonder, and her “porcupine” meatballs were a family favorite.

Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by her parents, her son Lonnie; sisters Leona McCartney, Jennie Dilley, Viola Gratz, Sarah (Sally) Weitzenkamp, Katherine Wilkinson, Gloria Jappert, and Mickey Ann Bunts; brothers Henry and Emory; and dear cat Baby (also special dogs Snoopy and Skipper, and many adopted cats).

She is survived by siblings Caroline Wood, William (Sherrie) Bunts, and John (Pam) Bunts; son Kenneth (Terri) and grandsons Jeremy (Tess) Hubbard and Sean Hubbard; granddaughter Shannon (Chris) Scharmer; great grandsons Cameron and Bailey Hubbard, Hayden and Noah Scharmer; great granddaughter Addison Hubbard, and many nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for the untiring care Georgia received from the dedicated staff at Kindred Hearts, where she spent her final few years. We thank you. And we thank dear cousin Beth who made it possible for Mom to stay at home as long as possible.

A gathering to celebrate Georgia’s life will be held Saturday, August 15, at the United Methodist Church, 625 Dousman St., Prairie du Chien. Visitation from 10-11 will be followed by a memorial service and luncheon at the church. (Private interment at a later date.) In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to the St. Feriole Island Memorial Garden (128 S. Prairie St., Prairie du Chien, WI 53821) or the Crawford Area Shelter for Animals (PO Box 338, Ferryville, WI 54628). The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is serving the family.  www.garrityfuneralhome.com
