The official schedule of events has been released for GD&T's annual Stars and Stripes Celebration to be held Friday, July 3.

The first event that Friday is the Interact 5K run/walk, with registration at 8:00 a.m. in the north gazebo near the veteran's memorial. Proceeds will be matched by the Guttenberg Rotary Club and will be used to purchase a shelter box for those in need.

The Lockmaster's House Heritage Museum will be open from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. with guides on site to provide historical information, and the Iowa DNR fish aquarium will also be open.

Food, music and games for all ages begin in the park at 3:00 p.m. Vendors offering entertainment, glow sticks and other trinkets, and traditional Fourth of July foods such as cotton candy, funnel cakes, sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn, corn dogs, nachos, stuffed pretzels, walking tacos, and more. Children's games include barrel train rides, face painting, fish pond, ring toss, a bounce house, water balloon launch, and new this year, an inflatable 30-foot rock climb and slide.

A watermelon eating contest will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the gazebo. At 4:00 p.m., water balloon volleyball, bean bag sets, and gunny sack races will become available for free, informal games for all ages.

Also opening at 4:00 p.m. is the beverage garden in the park, which will remain open until 10:00 p.m.

Brandon Bries of The After Party D.J. service will keep the celebration rocking all afternoon and throughout the fireworks.

The parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will run along its normal route. Lineup begins at 6:00 p.m. behind Meuser Lumber Co. on Koerner Street.

This year's theme for the parade is “Rockin’ on the River.” “We invite community members, businesses, and dignitaries to create floats for the parade,” says GD&T director Emily Moser, “as well as to decorate their windows to celebrate our nation’s birthday.” From geology to patriotic music, the theme, “Rockin’ on the River,” leaves participants plenty of room for interpretation. Decorated bicycles, ATVs, golf carts, wagons, and children’s mini floats are also welcome in the parade.

Following the parade, the Clayton Ridge Drill Team will perform at a new location on Main Street in front of the Veterans Monument.

Fireworks over the river will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Organizers are looking for volunteers to sell tickets to games, tickets in the beverage garden, help with clean up, and to help with other tasks as needed throughout the day.  To volunteer, please call Emily Moser at the Guttenberg Welcome Center at (563) 252-2323.
