Leary E. Peterson passed away peacefully on May 1, in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born in Soldiers Grove, on Feb. 9, 1923 to C.B. and Agnes Leary Peterson. He graduated from Campion Jesuit High School and went on to the University of Wisconsin at Madison completing his law degree in 1945. He married Carolyn Farrell of Seneca, who was “waiting at the steps at the bottom of Bascom Hill” for him in 1945. They enjoyed 59 years of wedded bliss. They produced five extraordinary children, Carole (John) Sayer, Jane (Joe) Mullen, Thomas (Lisa) Peterson, Jody (Charles) Ruhl, and John (Deb) Peterson. He is also survived by fifteen perfect grandchildren and four darling great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Mary Ellen Kelly of Libertyville, Ill. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; his daughter, Jane; and his sister, Jeanette Peterson. 

Leary was a man of great character, fair, honest, and humble. He was a true family man and a gentleman to the end. He loved golf, euchre and a good drink. He was an unpretentious man whose accomplishments were many. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Lori Knapp Inc. and Prairie Maison for their care and concern for Leary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 9, at 12 p.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, with Rev. James Weighner officiating. A private family interment will be later in the Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. until the time of services. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
