Maria Piorkowski

Maria Grabarz Piorkowski, 100, of Elkader, died Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader. She was born March 1, 1915, in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, the third of six children to Peter and Alazia (Vilimek) Grabarz.
Maria married Stanislaw Piorkowski on February 3, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader. They made their home in Elkader where they raised four children. Maria loved to garden, growing delicious tomatoes to share with family and friends. She spent many hours tending to the flowers planted around her house and she enjoyed putting together puzzles. She was a wonderful cook; her pierogi was a favorite of everyone that tasted them.
She is survived by her children, Richard (Joanne) Piorkowski of St. Olaf; Romuald Piorkowski (Joan Wangen) of Elkader; Anita Roberts of Racine, WI; and Raymond (Joyce) Piorkowski of Elkader; four grandchildren, Artemus Roberts (Melissa Kozinski), Ariel Roberts, Rodney Linderbaum (Kara Rahe) and Kimberly (Jonathan) Shea; two great-grandchildren, Ruby Shea and Ashton Roberts and one sister, Lydia.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, an infant daughter at birth, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, with Rev. Paul R. Peters as Celebrant. Interment followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa. Visitation was from 9:30 a.m. until mass time at the church on Saturday.
