Three Central students are reaching 7,900 miles across the globe to help youngsters in Uganda.

Riley Schroeder, Lauran Schroeder and Hailey Mahoney have raised money for school supplies for students who attend Shine Ministry School in Kampla, Uganda. Their project started grew out of a three-week enrichment opportunity recently offered at Central.

 “As part of the Awareness and Global Service class, the girls discusses places they wanted to investigate,” explained instructor Amy Bergan. The asked about a school we’d written to a couple of years ago. They re-researched the school and found contact information for the director on Facebook.”

The girls learned that the school has 235 students in the primary and secondary grades, and nine teachers. Most of the students live in poverty; many are orphans. Many girls are wed at a young age, leaving school when they marry.

“Classes are usually held outdoors,” said Bergan, adding that the windowless indoor classroom space lacks desks, chairs and other essentials. The girls also learned that students receive just one cup of porridge for lunch and must provide any afternoon snacks. Students make a two-mile trek daily to get water for the school.

The school also has a very limited amount of basic supplies like reading books, pens, pencils and crayons. To help with the school’s need, the girls raised $50 over the three weeks.

“They placed collection jars with information about the school (in various places),” Bergan said. The girls also urged Central’s junior and senior high students to write letters to their Ugandan counterparts, who, Began said, are curious about things like the kind of activities that students enjoy and snow. They’re very interested in snow.

“I found a ‘Make Your Own Snow’ project in a box of experiments that I purchased,” said Bergan. “I’ll be sending those experiments over as well as some pencils, sharpeners, crayons, paper and beading activity items.”

Shine Ministry School will be the focus of seventh grade activity later this quarter. The students will read the boom “The Long Walk to Water,” a true story about a villager who fetches water from a pond that’s a two-hour walk from her village. She makes the trip twice daily. Bergan has planned some activities to simulate the effort.

The girls developed a website during their three-week class (, which met the communication goals of their session. Bergan proudly reported that they also learned valuable lessons in compassion, awareness of global issues and a willingness to help others.
