Jim Simmons, 72, of Guttenberg, formerly of Libertyville, Ill., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospital surrounded by family after a sudden illness.

As were his wishes, Jim will be cremated, and a celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.

Jim was born on Oct. 9, 1942, the son of George and Anne (Thilges) Simmons in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Libertyville High School, where he met his future wife, Cheryl. He and Cheryl were married in May 1965. Jim was a government certified machinist and retired from his own business after 40 years. After retiring to Guttenberg, Jim was pleased to serve as a volunteer with the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital Gift Shop and the Guttenberg Care Center. Jim enjoyed being with family, music (singing and dancing) and “making sawdust.”

Jim is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Guttenberg; four children, Cathy (Jeff Roe) Simmons of Guttenberg, Debbie (Cary) Lovett of Park Ridge, Ill., Beth (Adrian Cornejo) Simmons of Chicago, Ill., and Michael Simmons of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Megan, Brian, Nathan, Charlie and Bennett; three sisters, Patricia (Gary) Peshak, Maxine (Rod) Chisholm, and Mary Ellen (Gail Rakauskas) Simmons; brother-in-law, Marty Potts; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
