Velma Jermaine Larson Berns, 95, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, at the Elkader Care Center. Velma was born on May 7, 1926, the daughter of Adolph and Anna Marie “Mary” (Johnson) Larson in Highland Township, Clayton County.
People who passed by the Clayton County Courthouse from Sept. 17 to 19 saw a unique wreath laid at the veterans memorial. It was placed by members of the Northeast Iowa Vietnam Veterans along with other local veterans, some of whom recently visited Washington, D.C., where the same wreath was laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. According to Mike Schmelzer (right), wreaths can be laid every half hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, during the changing of the guard. “When your group is there, they will schedule yours in so they can lay it. You just can’t walk up and lay a wreath,” he explained. “I don’t know how we were lucky enough to get it back, but we brought it back on our bus to Iowa and then had it freshened up here in Elkader.”
Standing with the wreath are local Vietnam veterans Mike Schmelzer, Garnavillo; Ed Blume, Elkader; and Dennis Mason, Marquette. “It’s not just about the veterans on the trip—it’s for all the veterans who sacrificed their lives in war. That’s why it meant a lot to bring it back to Iowa,” shared Schmelzer.

11-year-old Taryn Moser will play the title role in the Elkader Opera House Players production of the musical Matilda.
David Beck will portray Matilda’s father, Mr. Wormwood, while Christopher Lange will take on the role of Michael Wormwood, Matilda’s brother. Director Cheri Moser said the show will be family-friendly, with “non-stop fun, magic tricks, giant swings, tumbling, dancing and so much more.”
Matilda relies heavily on an ensemble cast, which includes eight young adult roles that enter the show as multiple characters. Other ensemble members include the eight young school kids who are Matilda’s classmates. Macy McGeough will play Matilda’s best friend, Lavender.
Meghan Birdnow will play teacher Miss Honey. She’s pictured with production lead Taryn Moser.
The Sierra Club’s Iowa Chapter has filed a lawsuit accusing Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials of using bad information to approve the Supreme Beef concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) near Monona.
