Schellhorn headed to state cross country meet

On the girls side, Abby Schellhorn narrowly missed a top-10 state berth. The senior was 13th with a time of 21:59.5.

Junior Will Koether (left) placed 21st with a time of 18:53.6, followed closely by freshman Tucker Ruff (right), whose 18:56.4 effort put him 22nd.

Sophomore Clare Grau placed 21st at the state qualifying meet.

Senior Caleb Nordheim finished out his cross country career with a time of 19:21.4, which was good for 31st place.

Alexis Ross, a junior, placed 51st at the district/state qualifying meet.

Sophomore Jaydin Dettman finished eighth at the meet, which was held in Cascade on Oct. 21.

Storm Huinker ran a personal best to place 64th at the district meet, and was under 23 minutes for the first time in his career.

Brayden Finley came in 35th, for his best ever finish in a district race.

Comeback lifts MFL MarMac to 18-13 win over Denver

The Bulldogs racked up 377 yards of total offense against Denver, including 174 on the ground for senior fullback Gabe McGeough. “Just knowing this game could have been my last, I was just running as hard as I could and fought for every yard I got. I’m blessed to have the blockers I had,” he said.

Powell led the Bulldog defense with 9 total tackles, including one sack and three tackles for a loss.

Karter Decker rushed for 101 yards on seven carries and scored the Bulldogs' first touchdown.

Cullen McShane carried the ball 15 times against Denver, racking up 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Shirley R. Jensen

Shirley Ruth Jensen, 96, of Marquette, died peacefully Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at her home in Marquette. Shirley was born on Dec. 21, 1924, to Archie and Ruth (Nelson) Campbell in Kenosha, Wis. She graduated from Bradford High School (Kenosha) in 1943. During WWII, Shirley worked in an aircraft factory and was a telephone operator. She played piano at the USO.

Horse enthusiasts enjoy Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club’s annual trail ride


Tina Nieland, the secretary/treasurer of the Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club, said the rides are meant to “promote horsemanship, trail riding and serve as a yearly social event to bring people together. It gets you out in the beautiful countryside.” (Submitted photos)

The Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club recently held its 73rd annual trail ride, bringing horse lovers and riders from all over Iowa and as far away as Ohio to the Elkader Horse Arena, where the ride starts and ends. This year’s ride, hosted by Dean and Missy Leonard, also utilized portions of the Pony Hollow Trail on a beautiful trek across northeast Iowa.
