Fire destroys McGregor's Ringling House

A McGregor home where the Ringling Brothers of circus fame grew up was destroyed by fire last week. Firefighters from McGregor and Garnavillo responded to the house at 14463 Great River Road, on the edge of McGregor, just after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

According to Tom Sauer, chief of McGregor Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1, the fire was caused by improperly placed ashes from a pellet burning stove. “The guys did what they could,” he said, but the home is considered a total loss. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

The Ringling family lived in the “Walton Hollow” home, which was at least 160 years old, during their stay in McGregor from 1860-1872. Four of the brothers were born in the community. This Oscar Fryklund photo, circa 1900, shows what the home looked like closer to that time.
