Anita J. ‘Billie’ Kobliska

Anita Joan “Billie” Kobliska, 89, of Elkader, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at home surrounded by her family. She was born June 12, 1932, in Mason City to Frank and Beulah (Cross) Wagner. She graduated from Charles City High School, Charles City.

Rosemary Berns

Rosemary Berns, age 82, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, of a sudden illness. She was born in the spring of 1939, on the 19th day of June to Lawerence and Emma (Overman) Bonert. She would later go on to marry Aloys Berns on May 18, 1958. They were united in marriage at the St.’s Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, and to this union six children were born.

French advocates for SASCC as she steps away from agency after 17 years


Merry French stepped down as Substance Abuse Services for Clayton County (SASCC) Program Director last week after nearly 17 years with the agency. Adam Sadewasser, who has over 10 years of experience, will continue on as SASCC’s certified prevention specialist, conducting school and community outreach.

Keystone Bridge project remains at a stand still


In this photo posted by the city of Elkader, one of the consulting engineers scans the stone to determine if there are any other new developments with the Keystone Bridge. Pedestrian access will remain closed, and the city is still exploring options for providing alternative access. Engineers will work with the contractors to develop options for repair for the city council to consider, and the city said this information may not be available until mid-May.

New non-profit Seva Health Center for Well-being supports mental health

Over the past year, Jessica Goltz said the grassroots curriculum Peace for Your Mind Project, which is designed to teach students how to improve their own brain health, has been provided to 240 high school students. During classes, students engaged in hands-on learning and conversation about the components of the brain.

Schellhorn’s 1500 runs lead MFL MarMac girls

Bulldog freshman Maria Stavroplus continued to perform well in the high jump last week. A height of 4 feet, 4 inches tied her for fourth place at the Clayton Ridge Girls Invitational.

Ava Lindner has become a key relay leg for the MFL MarMac girls track team.

Kaylee Walch hands off to teammate Amelya Weigand in the 4x200 relay on April 28.

Melanie Ruff took eighth place in the 400 at the MFL MarMac Girls Invitational.

Evelyn Ruff made up one leg of the Bulldogs' 800 sprint medley relay at Clayton Ridge.
