John William Nelson

John William Nelson, 75 of Elkader, Iowa passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Elkader Hospital.  Leonard-Grau Funeral Home is handling cremation arrangements. Interment will occur at a later date. 

 

 John William Nelson was born on March 1, 1941, to Millard Nelson, Sr. and Myrtle (Moon) Nelson in Clermont.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at West Clermont Lutheran Church.

Thor Fisko

Thor Fikso Jr. of Elkader, IA moved on from this life on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at age 91.

Thor was born September 10, 1925, in Garber, IA as the second of two children born to Thor and Ruth (Wathen) Fisko. Following an active childhood as the ever-irritating younger brother to his sister Helen, Thor enlisted in the Army. He arrived in Europe on August 11, 1944, exactly 33 years, to the day, that his father, Thor Fisko Sr., arrived in the United States from Norway. He worked as a Field Lineman in Northern France and Central Europe during the war.

Stanley Erickson

Stanley Wayne Erickson, 80, of Elkader, died Monday, January 16, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center.  He was born July 14, 1936, in Highland Township, to Albert and Ida (Wilson) Erickson. Stan attended country school then went on to Elgin High School where he graduated.

Following graduation, he worked briefly at Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids, and farmed with his brothers for a time. Stanley was united in marriage to Viola West on July 3, 1959. The couple was blessed with three children.

Jane Elizabeth (Paa) Griffith was born March 23, 1945, to Joseph J. Paa and Catherine Leola  (Murphy) Paa in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School, class of 1963.Jane then completed degrees in Child Development and Family Relations and Home Economics Education from South Dakota State University in 1968.

Dennis Dee Millard

Dennis Dee Millard, 67, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, died on January 23, 2017, at his home.  He was born in Oelwein on December 3, 1949, to Lloyd and Blanche (Walker) Millard. He grew up in Pony Hollow near Elkader and graduated from Central High School in 1968. Dennis served honorably in the United States Navy.

Dennis was united in marriage to Diane Mixon. Two sons were born to this union. They were later divorced. On December 1, 1979, Dennis married Jill Sedgwick at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, Strawberry Point. Three sons were born to this union.

Julian Carr

Julian Wiley Carr, 87, was born on September 22, 1929, the third son of Brody Shakespeare Carr and Mae Berry Carr o Hillsborough, NC. He retired to Elkader, IA in 2004 after an editorial and publishing career in New York. He died peacefully on December 31, 2016, in his Elkader Remaining to cherish his memory are his spouse, Raymond A. Stassen, Elkader; his stepdaughter, Martha L.A. Stassen (Reginald Kennedy), Wethersfield, CT; his brother, Alfred Carr (Betty), Hillsborough, NC; his nieces, Margaret Rose Smith, Tampa, FL and LeRae Cooney (Thomas), Hillsborough, NC; his nephews, Stuart T. Carr (Dennis Skrzekut), Hillsborough, NC and David K. Carr (Barbara), Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of friends throughout the United States.

Joanne Cassutt

Joanne Frances Donahue Cassutt, 86, longtime resident of Elkader, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at the Elkader Nursing Home. She was born February 2, 1930, to Mabel (Cronin) and Ernest Donahue in Marquette, Iowa. Joanne went to school in Marquette prior to moving to Elkader to work at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. 

She married Raymond Leo Cassutt on December 12, 1956. Together they raised two children on the family farm. She was a loving wife, wonderful mother and a doting grandmother.

Roy “Roxie” Engelhardt

Roy “Roxie” Engelhardt, 86, of Cascade, died Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Roy “Roxie” William Engelhardt, Jr. was born on the family farm, rural St. Olaf, February 2, 1930, to Roy William and Lillian Ruth (Wold) Engelhardt Sr. Roy graduated from Central Community High School in 1948. 

Roy was united in marriage to Karen (Lindroth) Engelhardt on April 18, 1958, at Norway Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with three daughters.

Norene Landsgard

Norene Henrietta Landsgard, 85 of Gunder, IA and Clermont, IA died on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at the Barthell O.E.S Home in Decorah, Iowa. Norene was born on January 29, 1931, to Ole and Nina (Loftsgard) Amundson in rural Clermont, Iowa. She was baptized on February 11, 1931, and confirmed on June 3, 1945, at West Clermont Lutheran Church. Norene graduated from Clermont High School in 1948 where she was active in choir and band and played on the women’s basketball team.
