June 6, 1933—May 13, 2019

Dr. Donna Lucille Sloan died May 13, 2019 at Macomb, Illinois. She was born June 6, 1933 to W. Leroy Sloan and Leta Sloan. She graduated from Volga High School and worked several years in Elkader before attending Iowa State University where she earned her undergraduate degree.

She taught home economics in Clear Lake and Marengo, IA. Donna returned to ISU to get her master’s degree. After obtaining it, she got a position teaching textiles and clothing at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL where she taught until her retirement. During her tenure she earned a PHD from Ohio State University.

Donna was an active member of Wesley United Church and also a member of AARP, PEO and University Women. She was an avid bridge player and played Mexican dominoes. Donna had many fiends especially her best friend, her cat Oreo.

Roger Elmer Louis Fuelling, 83, of Monona, IA, died Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at his home in Monona. Roger was born on December 17, 1935, near Farmersburg, to Carlton and Gretchen (Lenth) Fuelling. He was a member of the last graduating class at Farmersburg High School in 1953. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and was currently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona.

Roger was united in marriage to Beverly Kluss on July 31, 1955 at St. Paul, Monona. To this union four children were born. The couple divorced but remained good friends until Beverly’s death in 2016.

Mary Ann Andersen

Mary Ann Andersen died Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the age of 79 at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of her soul at St. James Catholic Church, Forest City, IA, on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10:30 am. A memorial visitation will be held in Cigrand Hall, St James Church from 4:30 to 7 pm, Thursday, May 9, 2019, preceded by recitation of the Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 4:30 pm, with a Scripture Wake Service to follow. Visitation continues at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass.

Mary Patricia “Pat” Nus

Mary Patricia (Pat) Nus passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019. She died peacefully in her home in Cedar Park, Texas.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Taylorsville Cemetery, rural Arlington, Iowa. Family and friends will gather at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington following the graveside service for a time of fellowship. Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Arlington is assisting the family.

Pat was born April 13, 1927, in Volga, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Hazel Candee. Pat graduated from Volga High School in 1944 and went on to earn her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University in 1946. She held several teaching positions in Iowa, including Arlington and Iowa City.

Pat married Vern Nus in 1949. They were married for 62 years, until his death in 2011. She is survived by a son Jon, daughter-in-law, Judi, and step-granddaughter, Michele all of Tucson, Arizona.

Cletus “John” Donnel Frink, 79, of Monona, Iowa died at his home in rural Monona, Iowa on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

Cletus was born February 24, 1940, to Adeline Elizabeth (Evans) and Herbert Donnel Frink. He was united in marriage with Linda Frink on July 22, 1969. Cletus earned his degree from Northeast Iowa Technical Institute in Diesel Mechanics in August 1989 and managed Drake Park Apartments in Des Moines from 1992 until 2001, at which time he retired to Kenny and Sandy’s Farm.

John ranched on and off for several years and was the true definition of a cowboy. He also drove semi for many years. John was a 4-H leader and also took a very active role with the Clayton County Fairgrounds. He was a man of few words but had a very strong presence.

Rosella Maye (Averill) Dugan, 82, Guttenberg, Iowa passed away April 4, 2019 at 6:57 am in the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born May 1, 1936 on a farm near Wadena Iowa to Shirley and Louise Averill and was the oldest of four children. She spent the first portion of her married life as a homemaker and assisting with farm chores. She then became a laborer at Ertl Toys in Dyersville, Iowa. She enjoyed spending time with family & friends and making puzzles & beaded bracelets.

She is preceded in death by her parents. Those left behind to cherish her memory are her children Leroy (Marsha) Dugan, Dennis (Cathy) Dugan, Lynn (Bernie) Jaster, Cindy (Arnie) Ingles, Duane (Shelly) Dugan, Mike (Connie) Dugan, Bill (Becky) Dugan; her brother Richard (Barbara) Averill and sisters Lou Ann Fox and Dianna Walker; 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Janine Schiller, 89, of Elkader, Iowa died Friday, April 12, 2019, at University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. She was born September 26, 1929, to Ernest Roy and Mae (Gifford) Smith. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Macalester College in 1951.

While at Macalester she met Charles Schiller and on June 27th, 1956 they were married in Tokyo, Japan with their dear friend Raymond Stassen as Best Man. Upon returning to the States, Janine began a long career teaching English in the public schools and also received a Masters degree in English Literature. In 1967 Janine and Charles’ only child, Leslie Ann was born.

Robert Sage, 86, of Oelwein passed away on Monday April 1, 2019, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019, at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 6, 2019, at the Calvary Evangelistic Center in Independence. Interment was in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Waterloo. Roy Robert Pady

Roy Robert Pady
July 29, 1923-March 17, 2019

Roy Robert Pady, 95, died March 17, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center.

Roy was born on July 29, 1923, to Arthur and Elizabeth Pady, in Washburn, WI. His growing up years were spent on his family’s dairy farm. He attended Progress Elementary School,  one-room country school, and graduated from Ondosigan High, a small country high school. He attended two years of college in River Falls, WI, but then returned to the farm to help out as World War II was going on. In 1945, Roy joined the Army, training at Ft. Lewis, Washington, before being send to Germany where he was stationed from 1946 through the ends of the war in 1948. On April 19, 1948, Roy married the love of his life, Kornelia (Connie) Nedecey-Ruszak, a beautiful Hungarian girl who was cashiering at the PX. Their marriage lasted 65 years until her passing in 2013.

Barbara Ann Hummel, 65, of Oelwein, passed away at Covenant Hospital in Waterloo on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, surrounded by her family.

She was born on February 6, 1954, at the Oelwein Hospital to Wayne and Janet (Shaw) Hummel. Barbara was raised and educated in the Volga area. She graduated in 1972 from Central Community High School in Elkader.
After high school, Barbara worked at the HiWay Café in Strawberry Point. On April 29, 1979, she gave birth to her only child, Brian Hummel. Together they lived in rural Volga, and Barb worked at ATWOOD in West Union for 25 years. In her later life, she retired to the Oelwein area.

Barbara was a member of the Lutheran Church in Volga. She enjoyed sewing and reading books in her free time, but most of all she loved spoiling her grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great niece, who she adored dearly.
