Billy Gene Butikofer

Billy Gene Butikofer, 77, of Elkader, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. 

He was born Dec. 31, 1940, in Elkader, to Walter and Lydia (Dennler) Butikofer. Bill was confirmed at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Elgin. He graduated from Elkader High School with the Class of 1958. He served in the United States Army in Germany. He was united in marriage to Marcia C. Metzger on Oct. 10, 1964. Three children were born to this union.

Bill was a devoted farmer, milking dairy cows until the fall of 2001. During his early years, he enjoyed being a member of 4-H and FFA. For a time, he worked at Walch Ford, then Bill and brother Norbert operated the Sinclair gas station, both in Elkader. Bill was a loyal member of Bethany Church, American Legion and the Farm Bureau.

Gerald L. Burr

Gerald L. Burr, 82, of Saginaw, Mich., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away Friday, June 22, at home, surrounded by his family.

The son of Alonzo and Anita (Haupt) Burr, Gerald was born on July 8, 1935, in Chicago, Ill. He grew up in Prairie du Chien. Jerry graduated from Prairie High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After the service, he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison and graduated with a B.S. in business administration.

He married Carol Ann Strauman on Sept. 15, 1956, at St. John Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. They moved to Saginaw, Mich., where Jerry was employed as a supervisor for General Motors at Grey Iron Foundry for 35 years until his retirement.

Sherry Silvers

Sherry Silvers, 67, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 1, at Crossing Rivers Health. She was the only beloved daughter of Raymond and Marilyn (Gibbs) Kellogg, born on Aug. 5, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa. She married her loving husband, Ernest John Silvers on Aug. 16, 1969, in Boscobel.

Sherry was a well-respected business owner for over 40 years. She operated a state-licensed purebred dog kennel and was an honored AKC and CKC breeder. She volunteered for the first Prairie du Chien Humane Society and provided a pet rescue facility for dogs and birds.

Allen John Berns

Allen John Berns, 59, of Monona, Iowa, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Great River Care Center of McGregor, Iowa. Allen John was born Oct. 30, 1958, to Louis Henry and Wilma Ann (Duetmeyer) Berns in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated from MFL High School in 1977.

Allen was self-employed and, in his spare time, enjoyed fishing, classic cars, riding motorcycles and playing cards.

Allen is survived by his two daughters, Amy Berns. of Monona, Iowa, and Kristina (Keith) Thompson, of Monona, Iowa; grandchildren, Drew and Mason Hird and Vivian Thompson; his father, Louis H. Berns, of Monona, Iowa; his brothers, Dan (Lisa) Berns, of Farmersburg, Iowa, Ron (Barb) Berns, of Monona, Iowa, Tom (Jo) Berns, of Luana, Iowa, and Brian (Kerri) Berns, of Luana, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Goldie L. Clanton

Goldie L. Clanton, 95, a lifelong resident of Prairie du Chien, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 3. 

She was born Dec. 30, 1922, the daughter of Gailard and Alma Marie (Oates) Collins. She married Robert Clanton on June 10, 1942, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. She and her husband owned and operated Clanton Construction for over 30 years. Goldie also worked as a cake decorator for Piggly Wiggly for over 40 years. Goldie enjoyed her card club that began during WWII. She was an avid collector of antiques and was a member of the Eagles Club Aerie 1502. Her husband Bob preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1992.

Delbert Richard 'Del' Schreck

Delbert Richard “Del” Schreck, 96, passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, surrounded by his loving family at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua.

Del was the second son, born March 17, 1922, to Charles and Katherine (Williams) Schreck in Merrill. The family moved from Merrill to the Steuben area in early 1928.

Stephen E. Welter

A well-known Prairie du Chien businessman, Stephen E. Welter, 77, passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. 

He was born Dec. 9, 1940, in Eau Claire, the son of Edward and Kathryn (Miller) Welter. Steve graduated from Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien and later from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He married Lynda Oestreich on Aug. 31, 1963. Steve owned and operated Quality Wood Treating in Prairie du Chien for over 30 years. He later established Welter Real Estate in Prairie du Chien and was involved in several other various business ventures. He was a member of the Peoples State Bank Board and the Prairie du Chien Country Club Board. Steve was a pilot and enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

Dr. Irving M. Bush

Dr. Irving M. Bush, 84, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. He was born Jan. 19, 1934, in New York, N.Y., the son of Max and Mirra (Guttman) Bush. Dr. Bush was a graduate of New York University and later received his M.D. from the Chicago Medical School. He married Ronnie Beth Schwartz, of Miami Beach, and later Jan Lanners.

Irving Bush was a good father. He taught his children the importance of hard work, the value of study, the importance of both the sciences and the humanities, equal rights and respect for women, and resilience.

Patricia A Kohlenberg

Patricia A. Kohlenberg, 64, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Bloomington, passed away at her residence on Sunday, Sept. 23, with her loving family by her side.  She was born on July 2, 1954, in Prairie du Chien, WI, the daughter of James R. and Charlotte (Hermsen) Kluesner.  Pat graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School and in 1972 she graduated from Bloomington High School.  Pat furthered her education at Western Wisconsin Technical College in La Crosse, earning a degree in medical transcription.  She was employed with Grant County Land Conservation Office and the Commission on Aging, as well as Grant Regional Health Center, and Montessori Pre-School.  On July 31, 2009, she was united in marriage to Cal Kohlenberg.  Pat enjoyed going to garage sales and collecting antiques.  She dearly loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Ardith Elaine 'Ardie' Sander

Ardith Elaine “Ardie” Sander, 85, of Boscobel, passed away on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fennimore, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. 

She was born Dec. 21, 1932, in Citron Valley, rural Steuben, the third child of Alton and Mildred (Ward) Fortney. She married William Sander on March 24, 1954, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Eastman. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 2017. Bill and Ardie farmed together on Niland Ridge between Wauzeka and Steuben until retiring and moving to Boscobel in 2005.
