William R. 'Bill' Specht

William R. “Bill” Specht, 96, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.  

He was born March 28, 1922, in Dodgeville, the son of Charles and Sarah (Reese) Specht.  

He married Mary Dickert on Nov. 26, 1942, in Madison.  She preceded him in death on April 20, 2008.  Bill owned and operated Specht’s IGA in Prairie du Chien for many years.  He was a founding member of the Prairie du Chien Country Club and was an avid Wisconsin Badger fan.  

He is survived by his daughters, Barb (Stan) Toberman and Peg (Kurt) Smith; a son Jim (Mary Beth) Specht, all of Prairie du Chien; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Marlene A. Hagen

Marlene A. Hagen, 83, of Wauzeka, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born June 14, 1935, in Wauzeka, the daughter of Edwin and Viola (Hurda) Reichmann. Marlene worked for the state of Wisconsin in Vital Statistics in Madison for many years until her retirement. 

She is survived by her children, Pamela Replinger, Elizabeth Harrington, Steven Hagen and Susan Adkinson; her siblings, Edwin Reichmann, Pat Dimmer, Victor, Lyle and Walter Reichmann; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Evelyn A. Peterson

Evelyn A. Peterson, 86, of Lancaster, passed away on Jan. 10, 2019. at the Lancaster Care Center, in Lancaster. 

Evelyn was born July 12, 1932, in Soldiers Grove, the daughter of Alfred and Mae (Guist) Hiller. She graduated from Soldiers Grove High School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Vernon D. Peterson on May 31, 1950, in Gays Mills. Together, they farmed above Soldiers Grove until 1957 when they moved to Lancaster.

Jeffrey John Hemmer

Jeffrey John Hemmer, 53, of Prairie du Chien, walked back into the arms of the Maker on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, after an extended illness. 

He was born on Sept. 27, 1965, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Harold Thomas and Donna (Leard) Hemmer. 

Jeffrey graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1984. He married the lady who made his heart sing, Paula (Gjetley-Kautman) on March 14, 1987 and they spent the next three decades cultivating their love and nurturing their growing family.

Anthony Charles 'Charlie' Foreyt

Our free spirited Anthony Charles “Charlie” Foreyt, 56, left this earthly world for the eternal world on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, of an apparent heart attack.

Anthony was born Oct. 3, 1962, to Ramona (Ross) and George Foreyt in Lancaster. 

He was raised in Bagley, where he developed a great love of nature. He attended Bagley Elementary and West Grant High School. He furthered his education at Southwest Technical College in the butchering program. He worked in the printing business, Eagle Cave, drove bus for Southwest Opportunity Center, and also worked in the food industry and construction.

William 'Bill' Leonard Neises

William “Bill” Leonard Neises, 77, of Patch Grove, succumbed to cancer on Jan. 2, 2019, at his residence, after a courageous nine-year battle. 

He was born on Nov. 20, 1941, in Prairie du Chien, the first son of Leonard and Elsie (Graf) Neises.

Kathleen M. 'Kay' Armstrong

Kathleen M. “Kay” Armstrong, 87, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018. 

She was born on Aug. 28, 1931, the daughter of Alfred and Jennie Douglas. 

Kay grew up in the Darlington area, where she met Joseph Armstrong, and they were married on July 8, 1947. She enjoyed cooking and found great joy working within food service in the Madison area. Kay loved to have her family around and they could always count on enjoying a big meal cooked for them. She also loved doing crossword puzzles, watching the deer that came into her yard, sneaking her puppies extra treats and truly looked forward to receiving her Sunday newspaper.

Merlynn John Johnson

Merlynn John Johnson, 69, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at University of Iowa Hospitals, from complications after open heart surgery. 

Merlynn was born on Nov. 23, 1949, in Richmond Center, to the late Ronald and Wihelmina (Grabanski) Johnson. He grew up in the small town of Mt. Sterling, with two older sisters, Marlene and Bonnie, and a younger sister, Karen, where his father, Ronald owned a cheese factory. He graduated from Gays Mills High School and later received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Wisconsin University at La Crosse.

William A. Ziemer

William A. Ziemer, 90, of Gays Mills, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018 at Gundersen Health Center in La Crosse.

He was born May 31, 1928 to Clara (Kasper) and William A. Ziemer, Sr. in Milwaukee. He attended Washington High School and Marquette School of Engineering.

Bill held some fun and interesting jobs while attending college. He was full of many stories of his mis-spent youth. For many years, he traveled throughout the continental United States, Canada and spent some time in Switzerland. When he was asked to go to Saudi Arabia to set up a desalination plant, he decided he needed to be in one spot. He bought his farm in rural Gays Mills and went to work at Advance Transformer as an industrial engineer, later to become the plant manager at the Monona, Iowa, location. He retired in 1987.
