Clayton County Fair under way

Clayton County's annual salute to its agricultural heritage is under way this week at the National fairgrounds north of Garnavillo with a full line-up of family entertainment, exhibits, and "fair food."

Activities began Tuesday when 4-H and FFA members opened a week-long schedule of judging and shows.

In the 1600s people from Ireland, Scotland, and England migrated to America and brought with them the basic music styles that are considered to be the roots of bluegrass music. 

As the colonists began to settle in the Appalachians, they wrote songs depicting their day-to-day life in the hill country.  The songs reflected life on the farm in the remote areas they inhabited. The music was referred to as country music, mountain music or bluegrass.

Clayton Ridge school board news

The Clayton Ridge School District board of directors met in an afternoon session on July 11 at the high school library in Guttenberg.

Vice-president Christine Aulwes called the meeting to order with board members Mike Finnegan, Kathy Ihde, Ellen Johnson and Alicia Helle in attendance, along with Superintendent Shane Wahls and board secretary Dave Schlueter.

Guttenberg swimming pool dedication and open house

An open house dedication and grand opening was held on Wednesday, July 17, for the newly-built Guttenberg Municipal Swimming Pool. The event was held at the pool by invitation from 3-5 p.m. for funders and major donors to tour the new facility and enjoy a private swim. A public dedication was held at 5 p.m. followed by a free open swim until 8 p.m. Refreshments were served at the landmark event.

July is National Blueberry Month. Blueberries, often marketed as a super food, are an excellent source of vitamins, beneficial plant compounds and antioxidants. They are naturally low in calories and thought to regulate blood sugar levels and aid in heart and brain health. The berries' pleasant, sweet taste makes them perfect for snacking, baking, and preserve making.  

The tasty treats are native to North America but are also grown commercially across America and Europe.

City council topics include food trucks, geese, golf carts

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on July 8 revisited the food truck issue, discussed the geese population and aired complaints about golf carts and ATVs.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led councilmembers Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker through the evening's agenda. Also present at the council table were City Manager Denise Schneider and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

The planning committee for Healthy Hometown Powered by Wellmark met on Monday, June 24, in the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics education room. 

The purpose of the meeting was to create a health and well-being vision for Guttenberg, discuss current community initiatives, identify and prioritize tactics leading to vision, and organize for success.

School board hires new principal

Laura Bilden was hired as the principal for grades 6-12 when the Clayton Ridge School Board met in special session on Thursday, June 27. The hiring is contingent on her release by her current employer.

The action came following interviews with three candidates for the position, including Bilden, on June 24. She will replace Andy Peterson, who resigned to accept a position in Dubuque.

In other action on June 24, the board hired Lori Crum as business education teacher.

Nine of twelve Bries brothers serve in the military

"Bustling" would be a good word to describe the home of the late Arnold and Regina Bries. The hard-working couple raised 16 children, four girls and 12 boys, on a farmstead in rural Clayton County. Nine of the 12 boys went on to serve in the military. 

Virgil Bries, the couple's son, told The Press, "We didn't have much choice. The draft was going on at the time. When you turned 18 you signed up."
