Candidates file for city, school board seats

Iowa school board and municipal elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 2. Local voters will go to the polls to fill vacancies on the Clayton Ridge school board and Guttenberg city council. The filing deadline was Sept. 16, and the following will be listed on the ballot.

City council to take bids on property

At the monthly meeting on Sept. 13, the Guttenberg city council decided to  take bids on property at the corner of Highway 52 and Schiller Street, known as the Bender property, the former site of a gas station.

The council voted to buy the property last November in connection with the Schiller Street property, deciding at the time to purchase it rather than pursue the easement needed for the Schiller Street project.

Shirley N. Wirkler

Shirley Naomi (Jacobs) Wirkler, 91, of Farmersburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. 

Visitation was Friday, Sept. 10, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and one hour prior to the start of services.  

Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Garnavillo Gospel Hall.

GermanFest to celebrate 30th anniversary

The Guttenberg GermanFest will mark its 30-year anniversary on Sept. 24-25. The festival, which celebrates our community's rich German heritage, has transformed and grown throughout the years, and requires an army of ambitious planners and volunteers to steer the two-day event.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship recently designated Stuart and Aracelly Stickfort's farmstead as a Century and Heritage farm. The Century and Heritage Farm program recognizes multi-generation farm families who have overcome challenges, adapted to fluctuating markets and embraced new technologies to remain successful for 100 and 150 years, respectively.

Local weekend events

Enjoy the upcoming September weekend by attending two major annual events in southern Clayton County.

The 40th annual Northeast Iowa Farm and Antique Association will present Plagman Barn Show Days on Sept. 17-18-19. The show grounds are located at 28384 Garber Road (C7X) 10 miles west of Guttenberg. The event features demonstrations on early farm and home practices and techniques, plus food, music, and other activities for the entire family.

City-wide garage sales set for Sept. 24-25

City-wide garage sales will be held in Guttenberg on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25, in conjunction with the community's GermanFest celebration.

The event is being coordinated by The Guttenberg Press. The ads will appear on a full page in the Sept. 22 issue of The Press and in The Trader (21,000 circulation), as well as on The Press website: www.guttenbergpress.com.

Guttenberg's River Park Cruisers are set to hold their 23rd annual car show/cruise on Saturday, Sept. 18. Registration for the car show is from 9 a.m. - noon and begins in front of Clayton Ridge School in Guttenberg at the intersection of Pearl Street and River Park Drive. "Vehicle owners can check in and receive parking directions in front of the school, and register for the car show at the registration table located by the community clock," said organizers.

Disaster proclamation issued for Clayton County

Clayton County was one of five Northeast Iowa counties included in a disaster proclamation issued on Aug. 30 by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

The action came in response to severe weather that began Aug. 24 and continued through last week, bringing heavy rain, flooding and wind damage to the area. Other counties included in the proclamation were Allamakee, Chickasaw, Howard and Winneshiek.
