COUNTY AUDITOR RESPONDS

The Clayton County Board of Supervisors met Monday with County Auditor Dennis Freitag, who was placed under oath and asked several questions about his job performance. Although Freitag’s attorney Peter Riley of Cedar Rapids indicated that Freitag had provided a written report to the Supervisors last Friday, Chairman Gary Bowden said that the report did not address the concerns outlined in a document earlier given to the auditor.

It’s become a tradition for a member of the Berns family to achieve “Master Pork Producer” distinction. The newest recipient is Paul Berns, who was honored at the recent Clayton County Pork Producers banquet. He follows in the footsteps of his dad, Tom, and his uncle, John, who were jointly honored in 2003. Paul’s grandparents, Leon and Phyllis Berns, received the award in 1993.

Though long-time Elkader physician Ken Zichal has retired after practicing medicine for nearly 40 years, he has no intention of slowing down.

“Oh, I have quite a list of things to accomplish,” he said, flashing the easy grin that has endeared him to a long list of patients. “Pretty sure I’ll manage to stay busy.”

BOARD WANTS ANSWERS FROM COUNTY AUDITOR

The Clayton County Supervisors Monday took an unprecedented step to address significant issues in the county auditor’s office. They voted unanimously to formally serve County Auditor Dennis Freitag with list of issues that he must respond to at a meeting scheduled October 26 at 2 p.m. He will be placed under oath and his responses transcribed by a court reporter.

The Making of Shrek, Behind-the-scenes magic aplenty

It’s not easy being green. Just ask Jonathon Moser who plays Shrek in the eponymous musical opening Friday at the Elkader Opera House. It takes about an hour to transform the McGregor chiropractor and Opera House stage regular into the loveable neon-colored ogre. But that’s nothing compared to the two hours it took makeup and set design wizard Cary Kann to complete the first-ever transformation.
