On Christmas Eve, Monona resident Donna Krambeer was busy preparing her home for Christmas with her family. Around 10:30 a.m., while working in the kitchen, she heard the carbon monoxide detector go off in the basement.

Sons and Daughters - Buchholz back in Iowa for two shows

Elkader native Teresa Buchholz is back in Iowa rehearsing for a Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre production. The mezzo soprano makes her home in New York.

A number of forums are being held this week to share an updated remodeling plan for Central Schools. The plan is the result of several months’ work by a facilities committee.

McGregor native Emily Yadoff returns to Northeast Iowa to take on the dual role of Main Street and Elkader Economic Development Director. She most recently worked in the Cedar Falls Main Street program.

Proving there’s some truth to that old Hollywood line “There’s no place like home,” Emily Yadoff is returning to Northeast Iowa in a position that will enable her to strengthen the area’s economy.

Yadoff is Elkader’s new Economic Development Corporation (EDC)/Main Street Director; she started her job on Tuesday.

JOYCE SCHOULTE SAYS GOOD-BYE

For the first time in nearly 14 years, Joyce Schoulte will breathe a bit easier when harsh winter weather strikes. Joyce is newly retired from her job as assistant office manager at Osborne Conservation Center. Among other things, that means she won’t be making the trip from her home in National to the Osborne Center, which is located five miles south of Elkader.

Looking back - Flood is top local story of 2016

Residents worked feverishly to fill sandbags to protect Wilkes and other south-end businesses

The flood of 2016 was the top local news story for the year. Though the Turkey River never reached projected levels, floodwaters did rise high enough to require sandbagging in the vulnerable downtown area. The flood caused considered damage along a portion of the downtown riverwalk where part of the trail was washed away and the sidewalk heaved. The county later received a presidential disaster declaration, which makes it eligible for FEMA funds for flood repairs.

All I Want for Christmas. . . Second, third graders share wishes

For several years, the Register’s holiday tradition has been to share letters to Santa written by Central students. This year, students in the three combined second/third grade classes participated. Their letters are published here just as we received them. We made no attempt to edit, correct or censor.

We hope you enjoy these letters as much as we did. Many thanks to the students and their teachers for continuing this tradition,

Roger Thomas retires “It’s been a good ride but time to go”

The Thomases shared their retirement party with a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Main Street program.

Certificates, letters and photos have been stripped from his office walls and his desktop has lost its characteristic clutter as Roger Thomas completes the process of sorting through, tossing out and packing up the accumulated trappings of 10 years as Main Street and Elkader Economic Development Director.

Sons and Daughters - Kramer is longest-serving mayor

Milt Kramer, who was born in Elkader and lived here the first 18 years of his life, was recently honored for serving as Manchester’s mayor for more than 40 years.
