Schroeder fulfills lifelong ambition with The Brim

Richard J. Wessels

Richard (Dick) John Wessels, 71, formerly of McGregor, passed away Dec. 24, 2021, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. Born to Leonette and Lavern Wessels in Manchester, Dick spent almost his entire life in northeast Iowa until retiring with his wife, Kathy, to Oro Valley, Ariz., in 2018. Dick graduated from MFL High School in 1968, and married Kathy Louise Halliwill on May 24, 1975. Dick served for the U.S. Army as a sergeant on the front lines of the Vietnam War.

Donna Watkins

Donna Watkins, 91, passed away in La Crescent, Minn., on Dec. 22, 2021. She was born in Kiester, Minn., on October 17, 1930, to Emil Hermanson and Ruth Olson Hermanson. Donna was the second of five children in the Hermanson family, including her older sister Shirley and younger brothers Ronald, Jerome and John. She grew up in rural Winnebago County, and graduated from Scarville High School in 1948 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1950. Donna taught in several Iowa elementary schools for 10 years.

McGregor vacation rental owner is top new Airbnb host in Iowa

Candi Johnson, who owns the McGregor vacation rental A-Frame in the Woods with her husband Jim, has been named the number one top new Airbnb host in all of Iowa. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

The A-Frame in the Woods’ biggest attraction is nature—a perfect setting to relax and unwind. “We do have wi-fi, but the guests we’ve had enjoy disconnecting. They enjoy the peace and sitting on the deck. They can watch a movie with their family or play games. They’re not on their phone,” said Candi Johnson.

According to Airbnb, A-Frame in the Woods has over 90 reviews and Johnson is maintaining a 4.96 rating as a superhost after just starting hosting this year.

Art workshops return to The Left Bank this winter

Winter art workshops return to The Left Bank Shop and Gallery in McGregor in January and February. Classes, which are held in the historical bank building at 158 Main St., are all taught by local artists and suitable for teens and adults. Beginners are welcome. All classes are offered for a small fee. The workshops include:
