Student Pop Art on display in Elkader

Bryce Heller (Kit Kat), Owen Hammersland (Butterfinger) and Layla Embretson (Mott’s Gummies) were among the Central students who created Pop Art candy and snack sculptures, which are now on display at businesses around Elkader.

Braden Taylor created the Trolli gummy worms piece while Kendra Whittle fashioned the large scaled York peppermint pattie.

Saydee Andrews crafted the Airheads art and Jake Hertrampf made the Twizzlers.

“I like this topic because it’s very relatable to kids and gets them into their work,” said teacher Carlyn Lechtenberg.

Central student artwork is being featured in  businesses around Elkader. Seventh and eighth grade Pop Art candy and snack sculptures are on display over the next few weeks at Wilke’s Grocery, The Pit Stop, Conoco, The Pizzeria and The General Store.

Holst leads Central effort at Ed-Co Invitational

Gavin Holst ran one leg of Central’s 1600 meter distance medley relay, which was seventh at Ed-Co. He also performed well individually in the 1600, placing seventh in the race. (Photos by Bev Hamann)

William Moser and Central’s shuttle hurdle relay team took eighth at the Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational on April 5.

Gerald E. 'Jerry' Kessler

Gerald “Jerry” Eugene Kessler, age 64, of Garnavillo, died Monday, April 4, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Jerry was born on Jan. 18, 1958, to James “Jimbo” and Carla (Kramer) Kessler in Elkader.

Keystone Bridge rehab underway

Construction crews from CJ Moyna & Sons of Elkader, in partnership with Taylor Construction from New Vienna, began work on the Keystone Bridge Rehab Project April 4. The bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from now into the fall. (Photo by Willis Patenaude)

The project will stabilize the Keystone Bridge’s downstream wall, replace the attached sidewalk and repair water damage to the stones from the road way. The scope of the project also extends to replacing the walkway and walkway supports on the bridge, replacing the bridge deck with reinforced concrete and drainage system and reconstruction of the driving surface from Main Street to High Street with concrete. According to city officials, the project should be “substantially completed by Thanksgiving.” It is anticipated the bridge will reopen for vehicular use sometime in October. Pedestrians should always have the ability to cross the bridge. (Photo by Willis Patenaude)

Group assures Clayton County’s pioneer cemeteries aren’t forgotten

ON THE MONEY: Funk shares his coin collecting passion through new business

Jared Funk has grown a passion for coin collecting into a new business, Northeast Iowa Coin and Currency, LLC. He’s pictured with two of his favorite bills, including the $10 bill issued in North Africa in 1934 that started his collection six years ago.

This image shows a small sample of Jared Funk’s collection, which now includes 4,000 to 5,000 pieces.

This is the $20 bill issued by the First National Bank of Elkader, which Funk compared to finding the holy grail.

Pikes Peak main parking lot, campground to undergo overhaul

Pikes Peak State Park will soon undergo a major overhaul to improve the main parking lot and campground. While the work is underway, the main entrance will be closed for a period of time. The main parking lot construction timeline should allow the park to be open by mid-summer, but the campground (shown here) will be completely closed this year. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

While the footprint of the Pikes Peak campground is expanding, the number of campsites will remain relatively the same, with more room between camp pads.
