The filming of a documentary about the Driftless Region has kicked into high gear with the coming of the summer season. The feature length film, tentatively titled “Decoding the Driftless,” is being produced by area filmmakers Tim Jacobson and George Howe.

Variety of live bands to play, with river as their backdrop, for Concerts on the River

The family-friendly, free summer concert series on St. Feriole Island, Concerts on the River, has increased in popularity every summer since it began several years ago. It’s back again this summer and, thanks to additional sponsorship of the regional bands, the quality of music will be outstanding and the length of the series will extend further into the season.

“I’m very happy to say that we’ve picked up a new sponsor. In addition to the Jaycees and city parks and rec, Mediacom is sponsoring this year’s concerts,” Prairie du Chien Parks and Rec Director Mike Ulrich said.

Beginning June 16 and ending Aug. 4, every Thursday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the public is invited to bring their blankets, lawn chairs and snacks—and their dancing shoes if they wish—to Lawler Park, where all can enjoy a casual evening of entertainment. The schedule is as follows:

Crossing Rivers Health services, jobs and new facility growing significantly

The growth of Crossing Rivers Health over the past year is evident in its expanding number of health care services, its fully-accommodating Prairie du Chien clinic, its newly-developed job positions, and its anticipation for future site development.

One year ago, on June 11, 2015, Crossing Rivers Health accomplished the incredible task of moving a medical center—nearly everything except the bricks and mortar. It was a three-day, precisely-orchestrated event, complete with a moving company, 1,500 totes and wire racks of supplies secured with shrink wrap, ambulances transporting patients and a staff command center directing all 340 employees on-deck.

“It happened without a hitch, really,” Chief Executive Officer Bill Sexton recalled last week. “There were some minor details, but everyone was excited about this new building that offers us a lot more opportunities than we had in the past.”

Sixteen bags of marijuana, meth found in Prairie du Chien residence

On June 7, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department applied for and was granted a search warrant for a residence on South 13th Street in the city of Prairie du Chien. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department has been conducting an investigation into the sale of illegal narcotics at that residence for the past month.  

On June 7, at approximately 5 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department K9 officer searched a vehicle belonging to Jessica Ott, 23, Dodgeville, after that vehicle was seen leaving the residence on South 13th Street and then stopped at the parking lot of a Prairie du Chien tavern. K9 Breck alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics being in the vehicle. The subsequent search of the vehicle revealed methamphetamine, marijuana and stolen property from Clayton County, Iowa.

Vietnam vets exhibit, ‘A Face for Every Name,’ on display June 16-19

“Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name” features pictures, names, hometowns, and dates of birth/casualty for the 1,161 Wisconsin servicemen and women who perished in the Vietnam War. The public is invited to view the indoor exhibit at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien, June 16-19.

The overall perspective of the indoor exhibit shows the many faces of fallen Vietnam servicemen and women from Wisconsin.

The 1,161 Wisconsinites listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., are the focus of a new state exhibit coming to Prairie du Chien Father’s Day weekend, June 16-19. The free traveling exhibit displays the pictures, names, hometowns, and dates of birth and casualty for Gordon L. Nagel, of Wauzeka; Gary T. Walz, of Prairie du Chien; and Nicholas G. Walz, of Steuben; and more than 1,100 others who perished while serving our country in Vietnam.

The exhibit, “Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name,” will be set up at Hoffman Hall, June 16, 12 to 3 p.m.; June 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; June 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and June 19, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It consists of banners spanning 50 feet in width and 7 feet in height.

An Engagement to Remember

Over the weekend, Prairie du Chien resident, Rob Shaw, made a proposal of engagement to girlfriend Carrie Gingerich. He hired a plane from the Air Signs and Banners to help him convery the message.

Shaw, a traveling nurse, got the idea while he and Gingerich were in California. “We’d been talking about getting married for awhile, but I didn’t know how to ask,” said Shaw. “But I knew I wanted it to be big, and I wanted it to last forever.”

“I thought about a lot of ways to do it. Like collecting white rocks, spelling it out, then taking her up to the bluffs,” said Shaw. “I also thought about having our friends hold signs up for her.”

But in the end, Shaw said that when they saw the planes, he just knew an airplane would create a big enough spectacle to make the moment memorable for all involved.

Cardinal 4-H Club to host Mount Hope Dairy Day Parade June 17

The Mount Hope Cardinal 4-H Club, Inc. is planning the annual Mount Hope Dairy Day Parade to be held Friday night June 17.

The activities will start with the Ice Cream Social at the Mount Hope Fire Station at 6 p.m. Club members will be serving sandwiches, cheese, pie, ice cream and milk throughout the evening.

The parade line up will take place on the hill with judging to take place at 7:30 p.m.

Former hospital property has new proposal for use

Future plans for the former Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital property to be used for a fire station, school district needs, and athletic fields were heard and embraced by the Prairie du Chien Common Council Tuesday night.

The proposal, which will go before the Crossing Rivers Health grounds committee this week and the school board next week, consists of a future fire station being earmarked for the western half of the property and the school district having the option to build on the eastern half within the next 10 years. In the meantime, the parcel would be developed into athletic fields, usable in 2017.

“The hospital is reviewing whether it would be best to lease, donate or sell the property,” City Administrator Aaron Kramer explained. He added that the proposal would address a couple of needs in the community and keep the property in public use.
